JLR Castle Bromwich has a glorious history - built in the mid-30's next to RAF Castle Bromwich airfield it started life as an aircraft factory building Spitfires and Lancasters - at the end of WW2 it was taken over by Fishers & Ludlow, a British car body pressings company who supplied complete trimmed bodies to various manufacturers, including Jaguar, for final assembly - it was taken over by BMC, their major customer, and then merged with Pressed Steel Fisher - in the '70s, as BMC/BLMH/Leyland contracted, it was handed over to Jaguar.
In the late '90s, the Jaguar S-type was put into production, followed on by the XF - the XJ production was moved there from Coventry in 2004 and the F-type has recently gone into production there.
This huge investment is necessary to provide JLR with another aluminium-capable production plant as their existing plant at Solihull is at full capacity producing Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Jaguar XE as well as the steel-platformed Discovery and Defender but even they'll be on aluminium platforms next model.
Now hopefully we'll hear about the factory in the south being given the go ahead to build the new Defender. If the Defender is about three years out, they'll have to break ground in the next year or so. That is unless they go with a new factory on the European mainland?
I am just looking at prices of these cars used on auto trader, its unbelievable how seriously they depreciate.
