Japan's Vehicle Production Steadily Rising

Thursday, December 28, 106

Japan's vehicle production rose for a 13th straight month as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. increased their output for exports to North America and other overseas markets.

Domestic production by the country's 12 automakers jumped 7.4 percent to 1.03 units in November from the same month in 2005, the Tokyo-based Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association said in a release today. Exports gained 25 percent to 555,295 vehicles, the 16th straight monthly gain.

Toyota and Honda, Japan's largest and third-biggest automakers, are raising their domestic production to meet higher demand for more fuel-efficient small cars in the United States, their most profitable market. The gains are coming at the expense of General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co.

Domestic production at Toyota jumped 14 percent to 385,703 vehicles in November, and exports rose 34 percent to 243,476 units, the company said on Dec. 25. The RAV4 sport-utility vehicle and Corolla small sedan attracted customers in the United States, the world's largest auto market.

Tokyo-based Honda built a record number of vehicles in Japan for November because of rising demand for the Fit compact cars and CR-V SUV in the United States. It increased domestic output 15 percent to 126,534 units. The company raised exports by 42 percent to 54,253.

Among other automakers in Japan, Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s domestic production jumped 13 percent to 71,685, as the company built more Outlanders for sale in North America. Suzuki Motor Corp. raised its output in Japan 1.9 percent to 101,938 units on higher overseas demand for its compact cars including SX4 and Swift models.

People don't buy Toyotas and Hondas because they think they're American. If anything, their sales would be higher if they imported every car from Japan. On Honda and Acura forums people never ask how they can be sure to buy an American-assembled car. They do sometimes ask how to get one made in Japan or blame whatever problems they're having on American design or assembly. I don't personally think this is rational, but the perception is that the Japan-built cars are better.

Interestingly enough, the Citroen "rebadge" looks even better than the original IMHO:

Kudos to PSA for devising a new style for Citroen that fits even SUVs, but at the same time why would they call it "C-Crosser" and not C7? The C-Crosser was a rather ugly concept that has nothing to do with that car...

Heck and how many cars does Toyota build in the states because it seems they import more than half of the cars they sell here and thats how American Toyota is or wants the people to believe it is
