Idyllic Canton Township No Toyotaville

Detroit News

Idyllic Canton Twp. neighborhood is no Toyotaville

By Christine Tierney and R.J. King / The Detroit News

Cherry Hill Village, a picture-perfect, prosperous American subdivision, was an ideal setting for "Toyotaville" -- a TV ad featuring a town with a Toyota in every driveway.

But Cherry Hill Village feels more like Ford country -- and plans to film the commercial were scrapped.

"There was too much controversy," said Tom Yack, supervisor of Canton Township, where the subdivision is located.

"It was just a reaction from the Ford people who didn't want to see it there."

He said many residents work for Ford, while others have been laid off by the Dearborn-based automaker.

Resident Mark Cramton had expected his street to be filmed for the ad but learned Monday that the deal was off. "They canceled the shoot because of the negative publicity."

The location scout, Warren Martin, declined to comment or identify the client. Toyota Motor Sales USA said it was not a national ad and was checking the origin.

Resident Pete Wells said he had spoken with the producer. "The theme was everybody has a Toyota or wants one," Wells said. But "you can't expect Ford people to go along with something that is counterproductive to their company. They just don't want to be part of it."

---------------------------------------------------
Is anyone else getting tired of Toyota's arrogance? Exactly what type of statement were they trying to make by filming a commercial for "Toyotaville" in a suburb largely populated by Ford employees?

Yeah, their 'everybody wants to be us' thing is getting old... really fast.

Imagine what would happen if they tried to film it in Flint!?!? There are times where an intersection is filled with 30+ GM vehicles - only GM Vehicles....

I'm really tired that they think that all Americans think that Toyota is Gods gift to the automobile. I think what they did was insensitive and arrogant. You still won't see it on any major news source. It just seems the US media protects Toyota so much.

Welcome to Toyotaville, home of the embarassing beat down everyone's truck takes at the hands of the Big 3.

No matter what problems GM has with shrinking market share, they still outsell Toyota by quite a bit. GM is still the #1 auto manufacture in the world. If anything, Toyota would like to be like GM!

Toyota's own people have said that "forward thinking Americans" buy Toyotas, and Midwesterners with "less open minds" are resistant to the Borg, er, I mean Toyota Machine.

Because we all know that given a chioce, people want to "move forward" into a technological marvel built by superior minds: A Toyota.

They had their time at the top, they enjoyed a nice free ride given to them by the media, they turned into the new arrogant giant who thinks of itself as invincible. What's next? They launch an ad campaign declaring "all of you who do not own a Toyota are ignorant stupid lazy inferior North-Americans"?

Watch out Toyota, your "superior" empire may very well crumble just like the big 2 1/2 recently has.

Well, they could probably get Michael "Fatcommie" Moore to collaborate on that one. Maybe MM would get his just reward...

I can just see their advertising now, using the voice from the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld:

"No Ford for You! You buy Toyota now!" :p

Ah, yeah sure. I'm sticking to the marvels of GM, thank you. Toyota's own people are just brainwashed is all that is.

Its funny though they are trying to change midwesterners with San Antonio "Toyotatown" stuff. And given their track record and the willingness of Americans go with the trendy brand of the moment, I don't doubt they'll have some success.

Re: Idyllic Canton Township No Toyotaville

I'm sick of hearing about Toyota all the time. Toyota is the best, will be #1, sales are up, has more hybrids than anyone ect. ect. ect.

I tell you, they have marketing wizards working over there because it seems like even when Toyota trips up, some how they come out looking good. Amazing how brainwashed the public and the press is with them.

YAK!

I totally agree with you. They advertise the crap out of their so-called wonder mobiles. I pretty much have gotten to the point where I turn the station just to get away from hearing all the blah blah blah....................
