The HHR, Cobalt, etc. may be efficient, but they just do not have the appeal that the Civic does. I've had several Cobalts, HHRs as rentals, and they're OK cars. One Cobalt I had the painted "metal" trim was fading already, and the paint was peeling off. The new Civics I've been in just have a higher quality feel to the interior. I don't think it helps that there are more Cobalts in rental fleets than Civics. All around, I think the Civic is a better small car, and judging by the sales numbers, a lot of people agree.

I agree the Ridgeline is crap. I will be the first to say that GM trucks are the best, hands down. This is where GM has put the majority of its resources. Unfortunately, this point is moot right now since demand for trucks is plummeting.

The new Malibu is selling well. Did you expect it to outsell the Accord in its first year on the market? That is completely unrealistic. GM needs more cars like the Malibu and fewer trucks.

Let's all praise the almighty Honda for making the right choices.

I for one wouldn't touch one and will continue driving my inefficient and unpractical HHR.

hummm

Honda: Ridgeline and and Pilot, and if you want to stretch it, CRV

GM: Tahoe, Suburban, Avalance, Silverado
GMC: Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL
Cadillac: 'Slade, 'Slade EXT

humm... wonder who was thinking ahead about gas prices...

You CANNOT deny GM has let most of the car line languish to further the full size truck development.

Here we go with the 'Anti-American' spew again....
BE-ing American is what it is ALL about.
Having the freedom to purchase what YOU want.
Not what you purchase.

Plus I will admit the Malibu is a better car then it's former self but, people are not going to recognize that off the bat.
Not after years and years of mediocre.

Further more even though they designed the Malibu to 'look' like a Camry (Err..Yes they did) it still doesn't have all the options a Camry has or the Accord.

People NOTICE that much. The buying public is not stupid and they know what they 'want'.

BINGO!!!

Yes, GM has some highly fuel efficient vehicles out there. And, yes, Honda builds the inefficient Ridgeline. But Honda's fuel efficient vehicles aren't ugly POS hamster cages with bug eyes and 10 inch steel rims!

Honda has had the Accord and Civic for eternity - because they're good looking, reliable, fuel efficient, functional, etc. What GM vehicle can you say that about? Some, but not many. And not (m)any of their small cars.

The Malibu is a decent attempt. I'll give GM that. But it's still middle of the pack. GM needs mid-sized & compacts that get the same great reviews as the Corvette/CTS/Silverado/Tahoe/etc. They just haven't done it.

The Aveo is an ugly joke. The G5/G6/~Malibu/Impala are boring and plain. Until GM starts making good performing AND good looking vehicles (and keeps them for more than 5 years), these crappy sales are to be expected.

Re: Honda to post huge gains in june

Anybody surprised?

Honda Civic ... on sale since July 1972, continually improved, and currently in its eighth generation.

Honda Accord ... on sale since 1976, continually improved, and currently in its eighth generation.

Now, let's look at what brand equity Chevrolet/GEO has invested in since 1980, just considering vehicles in the approximate size range as Civic and Accord:

Monza (dropped)
Chevette (dropped)
Sprint (dropped)
Spectrum (dropped)
Citation (dropped)
Nova (dropped)
Storm (dropped)
Cavalier (dropped)
Corsica (dropped)
Beretta (dropped)
Aveo
Malibu
Cobalt
HHR

...and we're hearing rumors that the Cobalt name is being dropped? Toyota and Honda have stayed the course with the Corolla/Camry and Civic/Accord, updating and improving each generation, building incredible brand equity for each nameplate.

The old third generation Cavalier was sold for 11 model years! Good grief, give me an aspirin.

Re: Honda to post huge gains in june

Americans really do have a short term view. Look what happens, gas goes to $4, people flip out like mad and rush to Civics and Corollas in droves. The problem is that consumer tastes can change hourly, whereas product offerings cannot.

I'm still planning on buying a V8 Camaro because I think this $4 a gallon gas isn't going to last. US demand for gas will drop and the dollar's fall isn't helping, but that can be reversed. Besides, there is just something wholly unnatural about the cost of a barrel of oil DOUBLING in ONE YEAR. Seriously, you cannot tell me that global demand in India and China has skyrocketed that much in ONE YEAR. I believe that gas will come back down in the long run and it will at least become affordable. I can deal with $2.75 a gallon.

Let's just hope in comes back down in time before GM goes bankrupt.

Look at the rims:

By the way, the Cobalt XFE gets better mileage than the Civic LX and the Malibu 4 cyl/6 sp. gets better mileage than an Accord LX.

So we are comparing turds against turds

I am just speaking personal opinion as these designs don't do anything for me.That being said the 09 Aveo doesn't look all that bad--if you like this kind of style.

To anyone that thinks the Fit looks better than the Aveo:

How much crack do you have to smoke to think EITHER of these vehicles look good???

That's not the point with these cars. The point is which one gets better gas mileage and which one has a cheaper initial cost? That's what most people look at when buying these POS.
