TOKYO - Honda Motor Co. has developed night vision that sends the driver a visual and audio warning when it detects a pedestrian in the dark.

Intelligent Night Vision uses two infrared cameras under the headlights to detect infrared heat-emitting objects.

When the system detects a pedestrian in the vehicle's path, it sends the driver a warning sound and an image of the pedestrian. The image appears in a head-up display on top of the instrument panel. The display retracts into the instrument panel during the day.

The system detects a pedestrian who is taller than about 3 feet and who appears between 98 feet and 263 feet in front of the car.

Honda procured the infrared cameras from Raytheon Co. but developed the night vision itself.

The device will be used in the Honda Legend, due this fall for Japan.

Honda won't release a price of the option until the car is launched.

The safety technology will not be available for the Acura RL, which goes on sale in the United States this fall. The RL is a twin of the Japanese-market Legend.

I could have sworn that Caddy had developed "real" nightvision years ago. Once again the **** mimic us, and will probably get heralded across the country for being so people friendly. While the DTS version was looked at as gimicky and not worth the price...

Actually, wasn't is a different company that made the night-vision for the Caddy? Raytheon? I could be wrong.

By the sounds of it, I think I like the older Caddy version better. Maybe this Honda version will follow the same path of success the Caddy version did, I agree it's not right for them to use night vision and be seen as a company making the most for people's safety when Cadillac already made it a few years ago.

Cadillac had it in the 90's!!
How can you say they developed it when they bought the equipment from Raytheon. That sounds like implimentation, not developement. Especially since the cameras and sensors are the most important part of the system.

Yes. GM has this already. However, the Honda system gives a warning if it see a person ahead. This is an improvement. The GM system was never raved about since it was considered distracting, it will be interesting to see if the Honda system is any better.

It would be nice to see GM take some of their good technology and spread it around. GM developed stability control in cars and now is a laggard in deploying it in their cars while Toyota offers it in many of their cars. GM developed the nightvision, but it's still only on one car. GM deployed ABS in a lot of cheap cars, then took it away. Whatever. I'll bet someone else beats GM to the mass market on their magnetic ride control. GM will selfishly keep it only on Cadillac and Corvette for much longer than they should.

while not knowing exactly what an entire night vision system includes, i'm sure the cameras aren't the only part. that's just like saying GM doesn't develop their own cars because they buy parts from other suppliers.

it's not available on the U.S. market RL, and this is just a news story. everyone knows Cadillac brought it to market first. quit whining about how Honda gets all the good media and GM doesn't. when GM builds really good cars, they will start getting good media coverage.

I'm still skeptical about nightvision...don't know if this new version will help. <_<

As I recall, the Cadillac system used one camera. I wonder what the advantage of the second camera is?

Maybe it has to do with depth perception since we lose most of ours if you cover one eye. Who knows.

You'd think a laser would be more accurate.

Honda needs design vision. They obviously cannot spot good design in the light of day.
Design vision - good one!
