2005 Honda Odyssey
The Car Connection
Being lazy serves Honda right.
by John Rettie (2004-09-01)

Clip:

Even though the old Odyssey kept its bragging rights as the most powerful minivan during its four-year reign, Honda has increased the power output in the new van by 15 horsepower. The aluminum 3.5-liter V-6 VTEC engine now delivers 255 hp at 5750 rpm. Its torque rating has also increased by 8 lb-ft to 250 lb-ft at 5000 rpm. Thanks to improved aerodynamics and engine tuning the estimated EPA fuel economy ratings have improved slightly from 18/25 to 19/25 (city/highway).

Buyers of the EX model with leather and the Touring model get even better fuel economy ratings of 20/28 mpg without any loss of performance. This is thanks to the first time use of Honda's new i-VTEC engine with Variable Cylinder management (VCM) technology that cuts off three cylinders while cruising. The system is totally transparent to the driver and passengers. Any potential vibration or booming noise while the engine is running on one bank of cylinders is avoided with the use of active liquid-filled engine mounts and an active noise control system that emits identical but out-of-phase sounds from the audio speakers.

god omitey gm is so slow bringing cars to market. and they do have the option to send their cars out sooner 2 dealers but they wait because no1 bought the 04s... grr why cant gm build cars that could last 3-6 years with maybe 1 or 2 updates? These CSVs wont sell unless, maybe, the SUV van miraculously becomes a hit. lit the magnum, suv wagon, only the magnum really does look ugly. thankfully though, the latest honda is aas ugly as the rest, and ud find a a horse in my garage before an Accord.

I thought GM developed this particular technology. Lutz’s is all talk no action…

Honda is already selling Hydrogen cars to Liberal SF city, while GM did the donkey work developing it

Yet another case of.....

GM talikng a big game and delivering litlle bits and pieces years after the competition....

I'm getting sick and tired of getting excited about GM's future....when they rarely deliver it.

TO:

MR. LUTZ-

MR. WAGGONER-

We're waiting for the proof!!!

Talk is cheap (and your stock reflects it)

Toyota called it "Engineering by Press Release":

General Motors is one step behind......again.....
First of all, with this great technology from the Japanese is really appealing to me. The Toyota Sienna has risen from the dead to become the 2nd best selling minivan, almost passing Dodge Caravan. The Honda Odyssey doesn't look the best, but it does look promising, and I'm sure people will buy it. The Caravan and Town & Country even have serious revisions, especially with the smart & intelligent Stow N' Go system.

Unbelievable. GM was touting DoD before any other manufacturer. Now, at this rate, they will be LAST to actually get market with it. Sometimes, I don't think GM deserves to survive.

Oh, and to all the GM haters on this board:

May this thread serve as proof that we GM fans actually DO criticize our beloved automaker. Nearly every reply to this thread has been by a staunchly pro-GM member.

Save a link to this thread so when one of the boisterous Ford or import people pipes up about our "GM bias", they can be shown the truth.

from an article in the Detroit news:

RE: The ULS

"GM is still debating whether to build the luxury car on the same engineering platform as the Buick Velite concept car that debuted at April’s New York Auto Show. "

Why in the name of hell are they still debating?
What in the hell are they debating about?

It sounds like as usual...GM is nowhere near a real car.

Detnews article

Again...talk is cheap and GM's stock reflects it.

I am a GM fan...and I'm sick of these clowns running this once great company into the ground!

I wouldn't be too hard on Mr. Lutz guys. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't even have the DREAM of Zeta. Let's just hope the thousands upon thousands of other people at GM take notice of the all the sales they're LOOSING by not having an affordable V8 RWD competition to the 300C, New Mustang, and soon to be Charger.

As for the relativly small investment in mid-vans (just interior and front-mods), maybe that's a signal that something brand new is on the way... of course, that could also mean the General has given up.

Instead of one uncompetitive model, they'll have 4 badge-engineered versions of it clogging dealer lots.  Which is good for us, we can pick them up cheaply.  But not good for our beloved corporation.
I want GM to build excellent cars again.

Their corporate emblem says

"The Mark of Excellence"

Not..."The Mark of Excuses"

It used to be that GM made the best cars without exception until the late 60's.

They can't seem to do anything more than make promises now. I know Cadillac is doing well...but the job is not complete. Buick's line up is pathetic and they are still allegedly making plans for a turn around. Pontiac is still having a rough time...Chevy's revolution is marketing hype. And need I say that Saturn is one whopping hell of a train wreck? Also another bastion of big promises and lame execution.

I know how good GM can be....

Again...to GM...Stop the Talk...Execute...Deliver.

Alfred Sloan, Bill Mitchell, Billy
Durant, and yes...Harley Earl would vomit if they saw the state of affairs at GM.

Despite it's quirky styling, this new Odyssey is yet another demonstration of how GM so clearly missed the mark with its CSV's. Uplanders, Terraza's, Relays, and SV6's will rightfully languish on dealer lots as punishment for a signficant lack of effort on GM's part.

Again, more and more people appear to be disheartened by wait-til-you-see-what's-coming-in-three-years kinda talk from GM.

The one of the core problems here is that the product development process (time it takes to go from initial concept to production) at GM is currently set for about 3 years while automakers like Toyota do it in 18 months.
