Ford's Chicago Trio Gets New Power

Link: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=107285

DEARBORN, Mich. — Lincoln's new Aviator SUV, which will arrive next year as a 2007 model, will use a six-speed automatic transmission and Ford's new 245-hp, 3.5-liter V6 engine.

Ford will use the new power plant on several other vehicles, including the Ford Five Hundred (the car's current 203-hp V6 is underpowered) and Mercury Montego sedans, plus two forthcoming Lincoln sedans, code-named D385 and E386. The D385, which will arrive in 2007 on Ford's D3 platform, will replace Lincoln's lame-duck LS sedan; E386 will be the flagship Lincoln, riding on a long-wheelbase version of D3 and arriving in 2008.

Supplier sources say the V6 is also likely to appear on two forthcoming crossovers, known as D471 and D472. The former is a Ford, which is likely to be called "Freestyle" and to take the place of traditional minivans in Ford's lineup; D472 is a Lincoln version of the vehicle.

OK, so where's the 3.5 in the Fusion trio that everyone seems to insist on and that told me I was smoking too much "stuff" when I said that the Fusion and Milan wouldn't get it?

I'm sure the Zephyr will eventually, though.

245? That's nice, but doesn't seem like a lot.

Other OHC 3.5Ls:

Nissan: 250hp-300hp
Chrysler 250hp
Toyota: 268hp
Mercedes: 268hp

Re: Ford's Chicago Trio Gets New Power

Im glad they are starting to use this engine, as for the horsepower, Im sure they focused on it having good low-end torque and being a smooth/refined engine over power, kind of like GM with the 3.6

The Ford V6 probably runs on regular gas. The Toyota and Mercedes engines require premium - as do the more powerful versions of the Nissan V6.

Maybe in an SVT form, the 3.0 is cost effective because its fairly old. Up the hp, and the trans may have to be changed, other driveline components, and who knows the price diference between the 3.5 - which is probably competitive with the HF series, Honda and Toyota's 3.5s vs the 3.0L. Also, the brand new Sonata only has 14hp more.

I agree with some though - it would be nice to see it standard on Zephyr and as an uplevel option on Milan.

Does anyone care anymore?
A new line-up of low-power, class trailing, boring-looking FWD cars. Welcome to the 1990's Ford!

We care, the ford 500 and freestyle are on pace to sell what ford targeted for the year and sales are growing each month. When the new power comes they will sell even better. Hey have u looked in the gm stable lately, the impala, malibu don't look very exciting to me either. A 3.5L v6 taking regular fuel and mking more power then gm engines with less displacement The 500 is slated to get the kick ass 3 bar grille to, the 500 is going to pick up sales then.

Re: Ford's Chicago Trio Gets New Power

Given the Japanese propensity to overstate their BHP ratings, I'd say this engine will fit in nicely.

Re: Ford's Chicago Trio Gets New Power

All I can say is that it's about time. Ford needed this engine a little sooner but at least it's here now. I think the power level of this engine right now is good and leaves Ford plenty of room on which to build in the future when the models and engines get refreshed.

I was hoping that the hp rating would be a little higher, especially after hearing that it might be as high as 280 or so. If the the slightly lower number is a result of greater refinement and regular gas, then that is good. I've always thought the Duratec 3.0 was a little rough. Ford will be able to make some changes and get more hp if needed.

Yes, but the Ford will actually deliver all of its claimed 245 horses. I'm not so sure the Japanese engines will do the same...

(Apologies to dizzer; I hadn't yet read your post).

Yea, but SAE has closed that loophole. Unless these are old numbers?

Perhaps, but I was mostly teasing. I figured the import sheep on this site would get their undies in a bind at my suggestion that those figures have been inflated by the Japanese automakers.
