Ford Tops IIHS Crash Test; GM Gets 8 Top Picks

Ford Tops IIHS Crash Test; GM Gets 8 Top Picks
So...What is that about GM and Ford not making safe vehicles???

November 25, 2008

Ford Motor Co. offers the most vehicles in America with top safety ratings, says the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The institute today released its "Top Safety Pick" awards list for 2009, which recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side and rear crashes, based on the institute's tests.

Ford had more winners than any other automaker -- 16 in all. Honda Motor Co. was second, with 13 winners. General Motors Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp. tied with eight each.

In all, 72 vehicles made the list, double the number of winners a year ago.

Chrysler LLC, based in Auburn Hills, was the only major automaker that did not receive a single top safety pick. The institute said Chrysler could have picked up five awards "if the head restraints were better in the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring, the Sebring convertible, and the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country."

Why is the Ridgeline considered a full size truck, Heck it isnt even body on frame. Its more of a CUT than anything.

Looks like the G8 and G8 GT weren't tested. Makes sense, seeing as they have already been proven on the Euro-NCAP system, but I'm sure it couldn't harm sales for U.S. consumers to see safety figures from a U.S. organisation.

This needs to be made very clear as part of the "homework" to be turned in to teachers Reid, Pelosi, etc. next week.

The Saabs were tested under Euro NCAP, though. I don't see any ratings for the Vauxhall VXR on their site. The Holden Commodore was tested under Australia's ANCAP and did decently:

http://www.mynrma.com.au/cps/rde/xch...re_ve_2007.htm

It was mid-pack. Nothing spectacular. I'm not sure what the IIHS holdup is for the G8. Perhaps their members don't have enough of them insured to rate?

Re: Ford Tops IIHS Crash Test; GM Gets 8 Top Picks

GO Lambdas GO!!!! Awesome news, finally a vehicle I own gets top honors, as well as being popular. (Oh, did you notice the categories? The Lambdas are LARGE SUV's, not Midsize, so they should NOT be compared to the Flex, the Edge, the Pilot, and the Highlander, although it seems like they are always put up against those vehicles. This proves that the Lambdas are not in that same class, they are LARGE, not midsized, this should solve any past arguments.

Too bad not more GM cars were in there, that's kind of surprising. I know my Bonneville would be in there, but they DON"T make it anymore, AGH!

Good post, interesting link. Did alright, but that's an '06 model before side curtain airbags were implemented across the range and a couple other minor adjustments to the car, due to government regulations. From the figures on that test, it looks like they're not needed at all.

P.S. I think Euro-NCAP and ANCAP are the exact same tests.

Re: Ford Tops IIHS Crash Test; GM Gets 8 Top Picks

So the Malibu doesn't get it because GM cheaped out on the head restraints?

Smart GM - real smart.

Is there anything the CTS doesn't do right? Bests a 5 series in safety, as well as an E class. Nice!
