Ford investing $6.2 billion, creating 12,000 new jobs by 2015

Ford investing $6.2 billion, creating 12,000 new jobs by 2015

Ford Motor Co. plans to invest $6.2 billion to expand its U.S. manufacturing base, a move that will help it save 3,240 existing jobs and add another 12,000 positions by 2015.

A large chunk of the investment will go into the maker’s home state of Michigan, which will see the addition of 2,350 new jobs.

“These investments, many of which are already under way, will ensure our southeast Michigan manufacturing facilities can support our aggressive growth plans,” said Jim Tetreault, the Ford vice president in charge of North American manufacturing.

The plan will cover an array of component as well as assembly plants. In the Detroit area, that includes an axle plant, a stamping facility and two assembly lines. The Michigan Assembly Plant has become the home base for an array of high-mileage models including the new Ford Focus Electric battery car.

Mulally would make an excellent mayor. Detroit would probably be child's play after working with the entrenched fiefdom geezers at FoMoCo.

Something to do when he leaves The Glass House at a young 70 years old or so.

Of course, he's a Seattleite and probably won't appreciate the unique charm involved in fixing Detroit.

However, no need to be mayor of Detriot. If GM and Ford are doing well then the city of Detriot should start doing better via more tax revenue.

More money doesn't mean there will be any leadership or management skills suddenly appearing. More tax revenue just means more will be wasted and embezzled.

More money doesn't guarantee anything except that you have more money. Unfortunately people who "try" to help Detroit either have a personal agenda or don't have the pull to do anything more than a community garden or two.

On topic, this is fantastic news. That's alot of money to invest in 2-3 years. Makes you wonder what they're going to do exactly with it all.

GM has a special tax incentive to be the city and Ford and Chrysler are not in Detroit.

It is obvious Ford needs to invest and modernize their plants, especially that some of those have been around quite a while, and Ford has redesigned almost their entire lineup. But why would there be new MANUFACTURING jobs? Isn't increasing labour productivity the goal of modernizing factories?

I believe there is a lot of hoax in those figures, but good for Ford PR.

No hoax as it was all part of the UAW agreement, this is good news no matter how you try to slice it.
I'm expecting a similar announcement from GM once they get their inventory levels back under control.......
