Ford Bronco May Ride Again

Ford Bronco May Ride Again
Date Posted 09-12-2005
www.Edmunds.com Inside Line

DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford is working on reviving its Bronco SUV nameplate as a compact CUV, which would be smaller than Toyota's RAV4 and would challenge Chevrolet's small Aveo.

According to supplier sources familiar with the plan, Ford's program code for the new Bronco is BV409 or 410. Look for the vehicle to appear around model-year 2008 or 2009 — it will likely be based on the next-generation Ford Fiesta subcompact platform, which is likely to arrive in 2008.

Ford showed a prototype called Bronco at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show. The production model would have styling inspired by that of the 1966 Ford Bronco. We say "inspired by" and not "mimicking" because the new Bronco is likely to be as far removed from the original as Dodge's new Charger sedan is from the classic two-door for which it is named. The new Bronco wouldn't have off-roading chops and would lack a V8 engine, and would therefore not appeal to hard-core old Bronco fans.

But done properly, the new Bronco could be a small, highly fuel-efficient, youth-oriented vehicle that is not embarrassing — perhaps even a cult vehicle.

A Bronco challenging the Aveo? That means it would be tiny and cheap. I doubt it would be too cheap or quite that small, so I think competing against the Jeep Compass is more likely.

I bet the "Bronco Guys" are throwing up right about now. Bronco should be a nice little 4x4 about the size of a tracker.

As much as I hate Ford, I would think using this concept would be the best interpretation of what a Bronco is, not somthing smaller...

Its a sweet vehicle. I think they should reconsider using the Bronco name, though.

Why not?

And judging from what I've read from some of your prior things, the same thing could be said for you and GM. :p

It won't be smaller than the concept. Trust me. It's pretty small to begin with.

I really liked that Bronco concept. I hope they don't make some mini-ute and call it a Bronco. Maybe a Broncette.

Man, this is almost as bad as when Chevy made the Nova into a crappy little hatch-back! I'll bet that O.J. wouldn't dare run from the cops in a tiny-bronco!

I figured they would go the way of the Toyota FJ concept, build a 2 door Explorer Sport-sized Bronco with cool retro styling cues.
Smaller, better economy, and fits in with those who need some off-road ability/utility and NOT 3 rows of seats.
The new Mustang got it right...

I wish GM would build that K5 concept they had shown a few years back.

I would like to see a full-size truck,4 doors,V-8, with a short 4 ft bed (plus an extender). The Av is ok,but really like a crew cab truck. Wide radius and quite heavy/tough to slow.

Re: Ford Bronco May Ride Again

Eh, whatever works. I guess Ford will use the Bronco name because that particular little SUV will look boxy and rugged like the old Bronco... so maybe it will resemble a Brono in looks at least. It will probably rivals the Scion xB, but will focus more towards American SUV looks than Asian city-car looks.

Ford had a silver concept at the Cleveland Auto show this year.
Forget the name, but looked like the Scion or Element.

The ugly EuroAsiaJunkBox style popular with the customizers.
