Re: First the GM Building, Now New York's Chrysler Building Bought by Abu Dhabi

Yes I would like them to go somewhere else and buy buildings. I would like to see America stand up and take care of itself instead of selling out to other so called "allies", but as we know that is never going to happen (at least not in my life).

Until they sell or lease some of it to Toyota.

After that and in conjunction with a Mayor Bloomberg initiated 12,000$ hybrid tax credit that will somehow exclude the Volt - because of course it's not a hybrid - and everything else that really makes sense - they'll put a few solar panels on the 'Spiral' and call it the Prius Building.

I imagine they'd rather do the same to the GM building first.

Didn't the same thing happen in the 80's and early 90's? I thought the J***--ah excuse me the Japanese bought up a bunch of prime real estate at an alarming rate. I wouldn't be suprised if many of our landmark buildings are foreign owned.

I find it funny how Americans think its great buying out other countries icons but its not ok when someone else does it to them, slightly hypocritical

Re: First the GM Building, Now New York's Chrysler Building Bought by Abu Dhabi

1. GM hasn't owned the GM building in decades. I remember the GM showroom on the first floor. It was cool. Now NBC broadcasts the Today show from that location. It's also Apple's flagship store. FAO Shwartz is also on the 1st floor.

2. Chrysler the car company never owned the Chrysler Building. It was built by Walter Chrysler (the guy who founded Chrysler) and had it never had anything to do with the car company. Walter's personal tool kit is still on display in the building.

3. The name won't change - different people and businesses have been buying and selling iconic buildings in NY for years without a name change. The fact that its the Chrysler Building is why it commands such a lofty price. Japanese investors bought and sold Rockafeller Center. When the value of the dollar increases and they make their profit, the Chrylser Building will be sold again.

4. Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, the only private full scholarship U.S. college for architecture, art and engineering, owns the land under the Chrysler Building and rents it to whoever owns the building. The rent money helps cover the free tuiton for students.

Big deal - it has been foreign-owned for years. Germans bought a 75% stake in 2001...

No argument there. Do two wrongs make a right? Are you angry because I pointed out that guzzling gas is hardly patriotic? Is that what the all caps to me is for?

My emphasis was on conservation. Look back at WW2 -- those Americans had it right. Conserve to win. Now in "wartime" we are asked by those in charge to consume even more. I guess our troops are supposed to benefit from us being wasteful and going into debt for the almighty "economy", whereas it was the opposite during WW2. Amazing.

Actually on the property front, I think at least the Japanese did a major pull-out back around 12 years ago, at least in New York and Hawaii. Several Japanese Banks left behind big branches in New York all around the same time, and the Japanese, who helped run up the prices of housing in Hawaii went and sold a lot of it when the economy started to sour in their home country.

Same could well happen here if we turn around and stop buying oil from the middle east.

The Chinese no doubt are buying up stuff, too. I don't know how we'll extricate ourselves from that. It's not as easy as buying a small car and consuming less. I don't know of any DVD players, MP3 players, or TVs for example, that are made in the USA. I guess one could just go out and buy a used VHS and old record player...(like the diesel chevettes ) Did you know that even the Japanese build their stuff in China? I remember buying one of the last PCs in Japan that was actually made fully in Japan when I lived there in the early 1990s. Now it's all Taiwan, China or some other cheap location...so we're not the only ones hooked on cheap stuff.

I'll admit that I'm hooked on technology, like some are hooked on big trucks and guzzling gas. So I could do well to cut back on my Asian gadget consumption.

This just in:
Middle East murders Christians, and buys NY, and on another note, we're slowly being fubared by the rest of the world due to bull crap. That is all.

The REAL GM Building.

The REAL GM building is in Detroit, on West Grand Avenue, it was GM's world headquarters from 1921 until they moved to the Ren-Cen, it's know today as Cadillac Place.

The 60 story GM building in in NYC was built in 1968 and sold in the late 80's, though GM does or did keep offices in the building, it has been through several owners.

This is the direct result of the weakening dollar. Everything in this country now is on sale for about 60 cents on the [euro, pound, yen, pick one]. Our land, our cattle, our ranches, our farm output, our labor ( Yep ), our vehicles, our entire output from industry are roughly 30-40% less costly than they were 18 months ago.

This is fantastic for business here. When this was being discussed on TV this morning the Trump kids were ecstatic that the new building that they are developing in Manhattan was being snapped up by Euro's who saw the inflated prices as 'chump change'. What was a $1 Million apartment ( or 1 million Euro apartment ) 18 mo's ago is still a $1 Million apartment to an American but to a Euro investor it's now a 600,000 Euro apartment. On sale 40% off. Everybody's happy, the Trump kids develop their building and sell it all at MSRP and the buyers get prime US property at a 40%-off-backyard-sale.
