Edmunds: 2006 BMW 330i vs 2006 Lexus IS350

Edmunds says of Lexus IS

Quote:
Like the BMW, this Lexus comes with a six-speed automatic transmission with three modes — normal, Sport and manual-shift. Unlike the BMW, no manual is available. And as with the 330i, this tranny is at its best when set in Sport, where one driver noted, "It's very adept and quick, allowing a lag-free burst of acceleration from nearly any speed." With this car, you might as well call on-ramps "runways," as the rush of acceleration feels more Lear Jet than Lexus sedan. A bigger appetite comes with the bigger performance — we averaged 18 mpg with the IS 350 (against EPA estimates of 21/28), testament to how much we enjoyed the car's performance.
If it was the CTS Edmunds would have gone on a rant why GM is going into bankruptcy...?

CTS is old. It is not even as good as the new IS350.

Also, I really don't think IS drivers are really going to car all that much about fuel economuy.

Wow, it seems like you completely and entirely missed the point of mbukukanyau's post.

Interesting.

Re: Edmund's Turns blind eye to Lexus new compact Gas Guzzler

Odd. When C & D did their comparo, the IS350 and 330i were quite close in terms of fuel economy; and don't fool yourself ... the CTS averaged an atrocious 14 or 15mpg in the C & D test, AND also managed to lag behind performance-wise at the same time. If your standard of comparison is the CTS, then the IS350 is the last car you should be making fun of.

Anyways, like I said, it's strange that Edmunds got a whopping 22mpg in the 330i. I've never seen ANY other tests get that good economy. For comparison, C & D got 18mpg in the 330i when they tested it. Likewise, owners of the IS350 are reporting higher average economy than 18mpg.

Re: Edmund's Turns blind eye to Lexus new compact Gas Guzzler

It's all how the car is driven. My G6 is rated 18/29. I've been as low as 8mpg on a tank and as high as 30mpg.

This thread is utterly ridiculous. You called them biased based on an imaginary scenario that you created. "If the CTS..." Yeah, well, unless they actually said something about the CTS opposite of what they said about the IS in the same exact situation, then there is no bias.

Fish for controversy elsewhere.

We should just use article titles as our topic titles when submitting to the news section.

Edited typo.

Re: Edmund's Turns blind eye to Lexus new compact Gas Guzzler

Those are some really expensive cars! They were both well into the 40s with their options. If you tick off all the options on the CTS, you only get to $41,420; $4000 less than the Lexus, $6000 less than the BMW. From their official site, I priced a 3-series sedan at over $53K. Why are these cars so much more expensive than the Cadillac?

No kidding. People like to put their perspective on the title or right before the article's text or link to try to taint the readers' mind.

A tip for news submitters: Reply to yourself right after you have posted and put your opinion there.

TheTruthAboutCars.com, while hardly a reliable review source, didn't seem too impressed by it.

Question: When these car mags do their car tests & comparisons, do they use the average fuel consumption figures from the week they took the vehicles to the race track where they did all those speed/lap times? It doesn't seem like they're using 'real-world' driving conditions for the fuel consumption they report. And if they're doing these 'speed' trials one week, then doing 'real-world' driving the next, how reliable are the gas numbers realing going to be?

I hate to read that car reviewers only had a car for 2-4 days and then they give us some bogus gas numbers after they've been speeding around town for 80% of the time. Unless that's how they drive their own personal vehicles...

Re: Edmunds Turns blind eye to Lexus' new compact Gas Guzzling Ways?

I really don't see the big deal. To me it seems that they were saying the car got 18mpg because they had lead a foot because they enjoyed driving it so much. Now if you can find an article with them having a lead foot in a GM car and ridiculing its gas mileage I'd be more inclined to agree with your sentiment.
