Still doesn't change the fact that my dealership is selling LOTS of Corollas. So much, that there's a waiting list for certain models.

Me and Leon Festinger go way back. We're also selling tons of Prius, Camry Hybrid and Yaris models too.

Facts is facts.

"LOTS" and "tons" tell us nothing other than your skewed opinion on what is happening for the entire company based on what your dealership is experiencing. Sure these vehicles are going to sell, like all fuel efficient vehicles right now, but the "facts is" that the corolla is not doing that well comparatively. You can't seem to see what the "facts is" when it smacks you in the face.

I gave them an honest look and cannot find anything I cannot get better elsewhere.

Is this how Oldsmobile started to fade away? Junior does not want to drive what dad did?

When did any of my comments mention the "entire company"? I simply said that there's no slow down at my dealership. Obviously, if you read the article, it says that sales are down. Did I ever dispute that?

But if we need to dispute things, here in Canada at least:

Canadians purchased 26,664 Toyota vehicles in May, up 15.5 per cent versus
May 2007 to set a new monthly record.

Toyota truck sales of 6,776 in May were up 14.4 per cent year over
year, to set a new May record.

Toyota sold 19,888 passenger cars last month, up 15.8 per cent from the same month in 2007 to establish an all-new record for best-ever month.

New record month for Corolla: sales of the all-new, Canadian-built
compact up 35.2 per cent vs. May 2007, at 7,435.

New record month for Matrix: sales of the all-new, Canadian-built crossover up 5.5 per cent vs. May 2007, at 3,062.

As far as sales go, the market will reward exceptional products that provide value that exceeds cost. Toyota has remained stagnant while other manufacturers have advanced.

Plus, did you see the Matrix review that Baja posted? When plastic pieces break off during the review, that's generally a bad sign.
Because you are basically a reasonable person I will address your 'concerns'.

The Corolla is intentionally a middle of the road boring commuter vehicle which addresses the needs of the bulk of the buying public. It has no aspirations other than to get good fuel economy and last indefinitely. It has done this for 40 yrs.

Sales: They stopped making the old Gen 9 in Nov/Dec and ramped down sales in Jan. Sales began to ramp up as the new Gen 10s arrived in Feb and March. May was the record month ever in the entire history of the Corolla with over 50000 units sold. Production is full out now and most stores are sold out or have less than one week's supply on hand.

Hard to argue with that success. It will however win NO beauty pagaents or ricer races. It will just move steel and make money. In the end that's all that counts, it's just a business product. Sales volumes to be revisited at the end of the year and again at the end of next year.

Fade away? Last month it set the record for the most units ever sold in any month in its history here.

Is everyone here missing the point of being in the auto business? Move steel, put fannys in seats, make money. End of story. It's a basic no frills people mover with a good price, dead solid reliability and great fuel economy across the board. That's value for most buyers.

Re: Corolla Confronts Sales Slowdown

The 2009 Corolla "major model change" looks like a minor one. The engine and transmission on the mainstream models are over a decade old. The platform is basically the same as the last generation Corolla. The interior looks cheap, even for this class. Toyota cheaped out with a beam axle the last generation Corolla. It seems that Toyota is continually cutting cost and content on this car.

Re: Corolla Confronts Sales Slowdown

I actually don't think the 2009 Corolla looks too bad in S and XRS trim. The engine has very little power and the interior is a little cheap, but it's reasonably spacious for such a small car, and returned Camry Hybrid-like mpgs for almost $10,000 less. And yes, the electric power steering is phony-feeling.

How in the world is the Matrix a crossover?

Experts blame a number of factors, including uninspired design of the new 2009 model and a flawed ad strategy that didn't resonate with Corolla's target audience.
They should've showed it delivering nice little old ladies to the bingo.
That would've gone over big!
