Confirmed: India's Tata Motors Buys Jaguar & Land Rover

Tata Snares Jag, Land Rover

India's Tata emerges as new owner of Ford's lauded Brit icons Jaguar and Land Rover.

The Birmingham Post has reported that Tata Motors will be the new owner of hallowed British brands Jaguar and Land Rover.

As we previously reported, the Indian auto giant was one of three potential buyers short-listed by the Ford Motor Company, which began selling off both car-makers' assets more than two years ago and confirmed in June that it was actively seeking a new owner for its UK-based luxury and off-road brands.

A buy-out agreement failed to materialise as expected in late July, and the winning bigger was as recently as a week ago not due to be officially confirmed until the first quarter of 2008.

hmm, i wonder what that will do for public perception, and resale value. One year old range rover for 25K anyone?

Oh wow... even though we've been hearing about this I find it kind of surprising. I can't see Jaguar and Land Rover fans being all that excited about this. If Tata does a good job of keeping their ownership quiet and not advertising it too much it might be okay... but I bet they'll be keen to use the well-known and respected images of their newest acquisitions to buffer their own non-prestigious image.

Re: Confirmed: India's Tata Motors Buys Jaguar & Land Rover

I am not sure what to think about this transaction, on one hand I am thinking the sale could damage the brand, on the other the change could free up the brands to move forward and be more creative and break from the current not so great image (Jaguar).

Hopefully the sale only improves the brands and they get stronger not weaker. It will certainly be interesting to watch though.

Time for Hummer to move into prime time. there is a chance now to challenge Land Rover with a truly western Premium brand.
The Next H2 should really step up and enter Range Rovers shoes.. in every way. If I was running the brand, I would move NOW!

Hilarious. Seriously the latest Jaguar is extremely refined indeed and the Land Rover could be very impressive indeed. To win the bid Tata must have ofered something the other suitors did not have.

Tata is not perceived as being in any way dodgy here in the UK. They're India's largest and most respected industrial group.

They bought British Steel a couple of years ago so theyre no stranger to running large European industrial companies. And their IT arm TCS competes strongly here with Accenture and IBM in the consultancy market.

Definitely a company on the way up and much better than a private equity asset stripper.

Anything to help circulation. I'd wait for Dearborn to confirm it.

That's excellent news for Ford. I've never been a fan of either of those marquees, however the new design direction Jaguar was moving, I did like. That was of course due to Ian Callum's re-assignment. So who does he work for now? Will he stay with Jag, or Ford? Ford should put him to work over at Lincolns and NOW! It's too late for the MKS, but maybe he can make the next few cars looks, ya know...good.

Tata looks twenty years behind the rest of the world when it comes to building cars. Jaguar's dead in my eyes. For everyone else's I hope Tata has NOTHING to do with developing and manufacturing Jaguars.

Heh, that's like saying "this serial killer is the least violent!". As far as consultancy, they compete on being supremely cheap, not by providing superior product. I work in IT and having to deal with overseas groups usually involved undereducated folk who have no creativity or critical thinking abilities, but they cost far less than American consultants so greedy corporate America goes for it.

This can only be a bad thing for Jag and LR. At least with Ford there was a repected automaker who they could share parts with. Tata has nothing to offer the brands.
