Chrysler plants to cease work on select vehicles

Josee Valcourt / The Detroit News

DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group will suspend production of some models in January to help reduce bloated inventories, several dealers said Wednesday.
Affected models include some minivans, the Dodge Ram pickup, Jeep Commander and Liberty SUVs, the Dodge Magnum station wagon and the Chrysler PT Cruiser.
To further pare its vehicle stockpile, Chrysler will build only 1,000 units each next month of the Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, midsize Dodge Dakota pickup, Chrysler 300 sedan and Aspen SUV next month.

I guess all that overtime is leading to some drawbacks at Chrysler.

I saw an ad in the paper today for deals on Chrysler SUV's/trucks. There were 9 of them! How can one brand have 9 types of trucks and expect to be competitive? Its no wonder the dealerships are overstocked. The market demand isn't there for that many trucks from one brand.

They have 9, trucks and SUVs?
1. Durango
2. Aspen
3. Dakota
4. Ram
5. Nitro
6. Liberty
7. Wrangler
8. Grand Cherokee
9. Commander
10. If you count the Pacifica

I guess you're right. But I'd hardly count the Jeeps. They have to be what they are. Without them, Chrysler has the Aspen and the Pacifica. Dodge has the Durango and the Nitro. That's not a lot. They need more crossovers.

+1. The Pacifica doesn't cut it. If GM and Ford have been able to do crossovers for the last 5 years, there's no reason Chrysler should have only done a couple (including the Compass).
Oh well...Chrysler's consistently been better than GM/Ford at minivans, so maybe it evens out....
