Chrysler to offer MyGiG - 20GB hard drive embedded in the dashboard

Chrysler raises the bar on in-car technology with the MyGiG: a 20GB hard drive embedded in the dashboard for ripping CDs and for storing navigation data. Included is a Gracenote lookup engine to provide artist, track, and title information; this is the first use of Gracenote in a new-car audio system in North America. (By the way, the Wall Street Journal reported that Gracenote may finally be legally allowed add lyrics to its other track information. It's about time!)

Chrysler showed off the MyGiG in the restyled 2007 Chrysler Sebring Thursday at a press conference in New York City, along with a reworked Chrysler Pacifica crossover vehicle (a tall station wagon) and Chrysler's first SUV, the Hemi-powered Aspen, a cousin to the Dodge Durango. Take a look at our slideshow for tech highlights of all three cars.

There's no question that the biggest highlight for Chrysler is the MyGig head unit (car talk for the radio), a single module. Here's what's included.

More at http://www.technoride.com/article/Ch.../183407_1.aspx

MyGiG includes the following features:

• AM/FM radio
• CD/DVD player
• Embedded Sirius satellite radio
• 20GB hard drive
• USB jack
• 2 audio outputs
• Bluetooth hands-free calling
• 6.5-inch LCD panel

Re: Chrysler to offer MyGiG

This sounds like a really cool idea. GM should upgrade their PhatNoise mobile media and offer it to every brand. Maybe make it built in like MyGiG.

Re: Chrysler to offer MyGiG

I was going to say, whatever happened to GM's PhatNoise offerings? I haven't heard much about it since its debut on the CSVs (which I always thought was an odd choice of vehicle -- right, all of those techy soccer moms are gonna love that...)

The other thing --- who makes 20 gig hard drives now anyway? They must be miniaturized or something, because 20GB as a standard HDD size went out years ago...flash drives are going to hit that standard soon. Also, I can't imagine having a platter style HDD in a car is a great idea anyway... Clearly I'm missing something from the "Hard Drive" description.

Yeah, I wondered about that too Ming. I think PhatNoise (and this) are great ideas! You can load your camera pictures on vacation, watch movies too, etc.

Yeah, i'd rather see a flash memory based system.

Other than that it sounds good. Too bad the car it's in sucks though.

GM is just barely starting to offer navigation radios, let's not rush things.....

i just can't get over how terrible the Aspen is.

Do they even realize what kind of rebate it's going to take to sell that POS?

great... another place to store our music.
iTunes is the ONLY place I want to rip my CD's to. Leave it at that.
If anything, create a better integration of iPods more like what BMW offers.

Funny. Pacifica, Town & Country, and Sebring already offer iPod integration.
This is a good way to cover all the bases; however, it's just another music repository to add to the mix.

By the way... isn't this a repost?
I remember reading about this before.

You probably read about it when they debuted the 2007 Sebring. They didnt give much detail on it, they just said they'll offer a 20GB HD called MyGiG.

Re: Chrysler to offer MyGiG - 20GB hard drive embedded in the dashboard

Great idea and one that I have been thinking of for years. I see no reason this should not be on most cars anyway. I hate that I damage my CD's well now you can load them in the car while you drive and call it a day. Now I have to find a Chrysler product I like that offers it but that is the problem.

Price will be a big factor. I cannot imagine that GM has sold many Phatnoise systems since the price is $795. What's an iPod cost?

Yea, thats all we need. Kids driving down the road "ripping" CDs as they drive. wtf. Do that at home before you get in the car.
