Carroll Shelby calls Camaro concept "adequate, not sensational"

12-Month Promise: Ford Pledges New Mustang Every Year

(also, Carroll Shelby talks about new Camaro)

DEARBORN, Mich. — Describing the Mustang as its "iconic" product, Ford executives on Wednesday promised to keep interest in the pony car high by providing "new product content" year over year.

"We will add new products to the Mustang lineup," Derrick Kuzak told Inside Line. "It's a commitment. Carroll [Shelby] will work every year on the Mustang."

Kuzak, however, gave no details on what's in the pipeline for Mustang. When asked if we can expect a 600-horsepower version of the car, he replied, "Never say never to anything." It was clear in interviews that Shelby and the Ford team may be a bit anxious about the prospects of a revived Chevrolet Camaro.

"With the new Camaro, they'd better not dream they'll have more horsepower [than Mustang]," Shelby told IL in an interview at the 2007 Ford full-line preview here on Wednesday, which showcased the 2007 Shelby GT500. When asked if the Mustang is racing toward the 600-hp mark, the automotive legend said, "It would be very easy for the Mustang to go to 600 horsepower — and north from there — and still pass the company's 50,000-mile warranty."

When asked if we could see a 600-hp Mustang in a year or two, Shelby responded, "Maybe."

"I'd get in trouble if I told you," he said, although he confirmed that a redesigned Mustang is due out in 2009. Shelby confided that while his health is good following both a heart transplant and a kidney transplant, he is now blind in one eye.

When asked for his impressions of the Camaro concept, Shelby said, "I don't think it's sensational, but I think it's adequate." He added: "I don't think the Camaro will come out with anything that puts us down. We are ahead of the game. And we know how to stay ahead. I don't see people — the general press or the public — knocking the design of the Mustang."

What this means to you: The Detroit muscle-car race sounds like it's about to get heated up in the coming years.

Wow...what exactly did anyone expet him to say..."uh no I think we're going to get stomped on by the Camero it is so much better than the Mustang"!!

Let the flame war between the GM'ers and Fords begin...

On the contrary, the Mustang and Camaro can coexist in the market and will compete.

Let the games begin!!!

I liked this part....they know how to stay ahead of the game....right....

and its kind of ironic that he can only see in one eye....

I don't quite get it, what do they mean "New Mustang every 12 months"?

Oh and if GM really wanted to, they could crank out a hell of a lot more horsepower in the Camaro than what the Mustang has. All they gotta do is throw in the LS7, perhaps supercharge it if they felt like it

I am sure the folks at GM are just shaking in the boots. Sure they could put a 6oohp motor in the Mustang, then they would call it the GT again and charge 100k for it.

Re: Carroll Shelby calls Camaro concept "adequate, not sensational"

An adequately "obvious" comment by C. Shelby. He is very confident in the versions of the Mustang he produces, which he should be. The truth is...without competition in the Pony & Muscles car market, it would fade away slowly. His BS comments only fuel a growing fire in the market for more Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros, etc.

If I were him, I'd crawl back to Chrysler and put the Germans to work on a monster Viper, then start work on a Crossfire replacement and make Shelby versions of everything with a SRT badge.

Before we waste a ton of time on the subject , we need GM to announce some type of confirmation that they are EVEN going to build the Camaro!!!

Well since the camaro will NEVER be faster then the corvette or have more power, it won't happen.

Then what is the point. If you price a mustang like a Vette then what is your goal. To beat a Camaro or a Vette? I agree with a previous poster. Make a **************** announcment GM!!!

What a blowhard! Funny how that the run of the mill 2006 GT still won't even touch a 1998 LS1 Z28-Let alone a 2002! You can't start comparing the $45k mustang GT500 to cheaper cars-they've stepped into vette territory for that price, and that last comparison between it and a BASE vette was ALL corvette. Nice try Ford.

Re: Carroll Shelby calls Camaro concept "adequate, not sensational"

I think that Ford should be more worried about:

1. Getting a viable replacement for the Explorer
2. Gaining Marketshare
3. Building a B-car yesterday rather that 2010!
4. Getting their Stock Price above $10.00
5. Refreshing the F-150
6.... I could go on for days but I think you get the point.

Horsepower doesnt even matter, I cant believe Shelby actually made a ignorant comment like that.

How many times has Ford and Chrysler had vehicles that have more horse power than the Corvette and GTO, but are STILL slower??

We see this all the time in the magazine comparisons, both regular and the tuned versions of the cars as well.

Take the 425hp HEMI in a couple Chrysler cars...still slower than the 400hp GOAT, not to mention Vette.

If i remember correctly, the 500hp Mustang, is still slower than the 400hp base Vette....
