Families Bury Cars to Get New Ones

Imagine if we treated relatives this way: two families, one in Philly and one in L.A., will receive new Dodge Magnum R/T wagons because they were willing to bury their old family vehicles in their yards. The Rosenfelds of Hacienda Heights, Calif., and the Dooners in Morton, Penn., each responded to contests advertised in June that gave the Magnums as a prize for deep-sixing the existing cars. The Rosenfelds sunk a '98 Camry, while the Dooners buried a '97 Mercury Mountaineer. Both families bid farewell with mock funerals, complete with pallbearers, a procession and a tombstone bearing the fateful inscription "Rust In Peace."

I read this on the internet today and found it to be a curious campaign, though I secretly enjoy the fact that they seem to gladly display a family burying their Camry. How great is that?

Maybe the Toyota Camry family was pi$$ed with their dealer's service?!

Now, wait a second. neither I (nor a lot of others) have heard of this until now, yet it supposedly happened in June and was nationwide. I think this is a very clever and funny hoax. I'm going to check the joke site www.theonion.com to see it it is on there.

Here's another winner. He burried his 97 Mercury Mountaineer.

Looks like the plastic liner takes care of the ground water contamination concerns.

When all is said and done, do they get to unbury the car, and keep driving it?

I'd bury my wife's old Sportage for a new Magnum in a second. I'd dig the hole by hand. My Saab would be a bit more difficult to part with, but I'd have to think about it real hard.

If this is real, I'd have to think that these cars would eventually have to be "exhumed" as groundwater contamination is a real concern unless all fluids were drained. Even with that, however, I'm sure that there are all sorts of nasty chemicals that would leech from decaying plastic, rubber and other materials. When old ships are towed out to sea to be sunk as artifical reefs, they are striped of all wiring and other contaminating materials.
