BMW’s U.S.-Bound Diesel Will Appear in X5, 335 Models
By Ward’s Staff
WardsAuto.com, Jan 2, 2008 6:00 PM BMW AG will announce at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this month plans to market a pair of diesel-powered models in the U.S. – the X5 xDrive 35d cross/utility vehicle and 335d coupe. The German auto maker also reveals a production version of the BMW X6 Sport Activity Coupe and a production 1-Series convertible. Both vehicles are due in the U.S. in late spring. BMW first announced plans to bring one of its vaunted diesel engines to the U.S. at the Detroit show in 2007, and speculation over its application has run high. The ’09 X5 xDrive 35d and 335d arrive this fall with the auto maker’s 3.0L inline 6 cyl. twin-turbo diesel engine. The engine leverages a urea-injection exhaust treatment, which BMW calls BluePerformance, to meet 50-state emissions requirements. The auto maker says the diesel develops 265 hp, a whopping 425 lb.-ft. of torque (576 Nm) and will push the X5 xDrive 35d from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.2 seconds while still achieving 19/25 mpg (12.4/9.4 L/100 km). It powers the 335d from 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds and gets 23/33 mpg (10.2/7.1 L/100 km). http://wardsauto.com/ar/bmw_reveals_diesels/ |

at first thought, it's strange to make the diesel available in a 3 Series coupe only, but then you read the power and acceleration numbers and it makes good sense. hopefully we'll see more diesels coming from Europe in the years to come. naturally, the Germans beat everyone else to it.

Re: BMW’s U.S.-Bound Diesel Will Appear in X5, 335 Models
Any answer GM?!!
This Christmas I got fogged-in in Cedar Rapids and had to drive to Minneapolis to pick up my flight to Seattle to visit family. While waiting at the rental car booth to get a car to drive to Minneapolis, this German business man asked if I wanted to share a car since I know the roads better. So him and I shared a drive to Minneapolis. Anyway during the nomally 5 hour drive which took him about 3 1/2 (he complained the whole way about the slow speed limits) we covered a wide range of topics. I expressed my desire for more diesel products in the US. He mentioned how diesels are more common in Europe, and they run on a more refined deisel fuel. We also talked about hybrids and he thinks they are a joke, he mentioned how diesels are a much better solution. I agreed. C'mon GM, offer a diesel for the Lambdas and sedans. Build it and they will come.

GM should make a diesel engine like this one. 425lbs-ft. That is amazing. You have to get GM heavy duty trucks to get that much torque. X5 with x drive gets 25mpg. And it can still seat seven passengers. How is that for two mode hybrid. Those two mode hybrids make no seance in heavy vehicles. Diesel does. And a 3 series that can hit 6.2 sec to 60 and still get 33 mpg. How is that lutz for saying GM can not make rwd car that will get 35 mpg. Guess what mercedes and bmw already do.

Relax its coming. You know everything from gm you have to wait for couple years to get. You know competition has this now. What good will 4.5l do for cars. Nothing. Can gm put that big of an enginge in rwd car and still get 35 mpg? No way. So why should i relax. Even in few years we will not see diesel power cars from gm. So what is there to relax about?

I wonder what the service costs will be on these new European diesels. Yes they give good power and mileage which I indeed do appreciate, however, if they have to be serviced (Filters,Oil,etc.) on a regular basis they may not be economically viable.

Re: BMW’s U.S.-Bound Diesel Will Appear in X5, 335 Models
I agree with you 100%. Even if you put that 3.0l from bmw in gm trucks it has 425lbs. That is more then most gm v-8 in gm trucks. So why not make something like that and you can use engine like that in trucks, suvs, and cars. But 4.5l you can only use in trucks and big suv's. Oooo and remebmber lutz said diesel will only give you 15% gain in fuel economy. Maybe he should talk to mercedes and bmw to see how they get 30-40% improvment over gasoline engines.

The whole (LD) diesel 'story' in this country is arguably the stupidest bad joke aspect of our pretend energy policy AKA Whats good for big oil is good for the country . Since we no longer can cripple diesel with third world sulpher content standards lets try and get it done with emissions standards . They also have a higher cetane number/energy content over there - we 'somehow' end up again at the bottom of the barrel . For years one of my favorite rentals (Europe)/ownership (USA) was a plain 524dt 2.4L 5Sp MT .( Thats no misprint and we support the President (on this issue only) as far as "don't ask don't tell" .) Both these two are on the 'emergency use' only buy policy that I've implemented around here , but I'm disappointed they're bringing the hi performance low mileage version without some of the others. Watch , the next idiotic post on this thread will try and tell you toyota/honda hybrids are better for the environment , get better fuel economy , and are more profitable for the OEM all of which as blanket statements are false. While some US bound diesels appear to be hovering in the 20/30% 'measured' improvement range that ain't the whole story - by a long shot . Hope they redeem themselves with the (hi mileage crowd) by bringing the MiniD , a combination that just like a 1.7L diesel Astra could knock at least two wheels off the Prius and actually maybe break even or better profit wise.

Re: BMW’s U.S.-Bound Diesel Will Appear in X5, 335 Models
I'm all for the benefits of a diesel, both the new upcoming 4.5L Duramax for light trucks and SUVs, along with any other kind of small engine that GM could use in the automotive fleet. But another significant issue with diesel in this country is the price. Diesel most often goes considerably higher than even regular 87 octane gasoline. Adding more diesel vehicles to the road without increasing the supply, isn't going to help the price any. Personally, I parked my 6.6L Duramax for the winter since I'm not doing any trailer towing. Saves on insurance, fuel costs plus keeps the lovely Michigan salt off from it for the winter.

BMW has free maint. during the warranty so that would not be an issue until after the warranty's expiration. You could always sell it before expiration to avoid maint. fees and the dreaded German electrical problems.
