BMW 4 Series Coupe Concept First Look

BMW 4 Series Coupe Concept First Look

The BMW Concept 4 Series is one sexy, production-intent concept, and it better be, as its stunning design will be a major reason why consumers eschew the 3 Series sedan for the upcoming 3 Ser...err, 4 Series coupe. Making its debut at the 2013 Detroit auto show, the BMW Concept 4 Series is a close preview of what we can expect with the latest BMW 3 Series-based coupe. And aside from one nagging real-world reservation about the upcoming production-spec 4 Series, we like what we see.

The coming 4 Series coupe, convertible, and rumored Gran Coupe will enter the mid-2010s with a higher numerical designation to signify that they're that much more special than mechanically related 3 Series sedans. Whether BMW can pull off its name game remains to be seen, but the product planning crew in Munich no doubt looked to the success Audi has had with the A4-based A5 when devising its 4 Series plan.

At least in concept form, the BMW 4 Series (currently lacking details like real-world door handles and more realistically sized wheels) looks to be a bit more than just a 3 Series sedan with two doors sliced off. Wider, lower, and longer than the outgoing car, the Concept 4 Series sports a roofline that gently sweeps down into the short rear deck. And before you roll your eyes at yet another automaker resorting to fake side vents to spice up a design, BMW says these are aerodynamically functional.

The ATS better grow a few inch before they start talking about competing. The 3 series has grown.

Looking at how good the 6-Series gran coupe turned out I'm wondering what a 3-series version would look like. Oh also GM needs the ATS coupe ASAP.

The current 3 coupe is one of the best looking cars of all time IMO. Def the best looking BMW ever made. This is a step down. It's over-done.

So we can't have a two door 3 series but we can have a four door 6 series? What are they going for with their odds and evens nomenclature?

The coupes design language is truly becoming its own. The sedans that are being built off of the coupes designs look pretty damn good.

Re: BMW 4 Series Coupe Concept First Look

For the prices they are charging, this should be here already. But you know it will be watereddown somewhat and all those fancy options will come at a huge price.

Also, BMW interiors (except for the high end) are not that great with cheaper looking plastics in many areas and lots of hard surfaces. Let's see if they upgrade, especially since GM interiors are getting pretty nice even at the low end.

P.S. Those glossy seats would make for a slick ride - a.k.a. your fanny would be all over the place, especially in dress pants.

Except for the disproportionately large cheek scoops this is beautiful! I wish other designers would take a page from this design and get away from the wedge theme.

    Mine! Mine mine mine mine!
What is happening to the GM that grew up with for these many decades? If I could I would institute a hostile take over and kick the entire board and executives out and fill the positions with creative minds under the age of 35.

So, are there any credible rumors about when the ATS coupe will be shown?
