A250: Chery launches first self-developed model

China's Chery Auto launches first model with self-developed engines

Geely may have been the only Chinese car-maker displaying its wares at the Detroit motor show this week, but rival Chery is not to be left out: it launched its new saloon, the A520, in China this week, with the promise that this would be exported to the US.

The A250 will be distributed in the US by Visionary Vehicles, the company headed by maverick entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin - the man behind "Canada's DeLorean", the failed Bricklin super-coupe, and exports of Yugo models to America. Bricklin had to recently admit that his plans for a grand launch had been delayed, but has said that he now has a network of dealers lined up to sell the cut-price vehicles. Visionary Vehicles has invested in the development work of the US-bound cars.

The A520 is built on a Seat Toledo-based platform, and is fitted with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine developed by Austrian firm AVL. Its bodywork has been designed by Bertone. Visionary Vehicles bravely suggests that it could go up against the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4, though it could at least make inroads into Kia Optima/Hyundai Sonata territory. Prices will start from around $19,000. Six-cylinder models are expected to follow.

Fellow Chinese car-maker Zotye Auto has also announced its intentions to export this week, reports Edmunds.com. It has revealed its Zotye2008 mini-SUV - which looks an awful lot like the outgoing Daihatsu Terios - and declared that it will send this to South America, the Middle East, Russia and other developing markets. Sales in western Europe and the US could follow.

The 4x4 is fitted with a 1.6-litre Mitsubishi engine and is offered with ABS, a CD/MP3 player, central locking and electric windows - and it costs less than $7,500.

"Keep watching these cut-price Chinese cars", says Edmunds. "They may not be here [the US] today, maybe not tomorrow, but one of these days"...

Re: A250: Chery launches first self-developed model

I love the SUV: 1.6 for 7,500? Sounds like my gator or dune buggy!!! Anyways, are there any parts on that vehicle that are actually Chery developed or is Chery just a assembler for parts from other manufacutuers? So besides paying workers .75/hour labor, they are just putting everything together and selling it. No wonder costs are low, its just like my lego toybox. grab some parts and bam, a car. Sorry, my old toys and new tools that are made in china are junk, so why would i want a car with that sticker????

Re: A250: Chery launches first self-developed model

I see the end of Honda, Nissan..
Toyota, GM, DCX, Hyundai, VW might...will survive the chinese onslaught.. nothing else will.
India will soon enter the market place with Tata, Mahindra and Eicher and other homegrown brands..

So THIS is the car that Visionary Vehicles says can compete with the 3-Series!

What's the difference between going to a store & buying a cheap-ass Korean car, and going to a store & buying a cheap-ass Korean car?

Re: A250: Chery launches first self-developed model

Nothing original at all. I'm sure its been mentioned before but even their logo is a rip off - a little too similar to the Infinity logo if you ask me.

Altima? No. Ford Five Hundred? Yes. Blatantly ripped off design cues.
