6.6-liter Hemi in Store for 2008 Challenger?
6.6-liter Hemi in store for 2008 Challenger?
![]() DaimlerChrysler is working on a 6.6-liter Hemi V8 for the forthcoming 2008/2009 Dodge Challenger, according to Hemmings Motor News. A Chrysler insider reportedly told the publication that company officials want to "come out of the gate" with a "real performance car." Recent reports have indicated the Challenger will be offered with V8 engines only — with perhaps a standard Hemi and SRT variant. Chrysler could be planning a more powerful Hemi to enable it to compete with a top-of-the-line performance version of the Chevrolet Camaro. Back in January, GM's Bob Lutz said Chrysler's 425 horsepower 6.1-liter Hemi was not a concern. "I would just reply that we have a certified 1OO more on tap from the ZO6 engine, should the need arise," he said. Earlier this month, Chrysler announced the Challenger would go into production in 2008.

Damn, for a car that hasn't been greenlighted yet, the Camaro has the competition scared all over. that is just funny to me.

Ford and DCX have plenty of time to upgrade their stuff for the Camaro. They can wait until the Camaro comes out before doing anymore necessary power upgrading so they don't have to guess the Camaro's production HP. That way, the Camaro would only have the power advantage for only a short period. This upped 6.6L displacement and HP increase seems to be aimmed to compete with a car that already exists with known specs... and that's the Shelby Mustang.

this really isn't a big deal. first it will get horrible gas milage
its big and heavy so it wont run with the camaro. The 400 hp 6.o liter in the camaro will probably match or beat the 6.6 hemi anyway |

As for this new engine, good for them. It will be hard to match the LS7 but even if they come close it'll make a good competitor. All of a sudden Ford's GT500 doesn't look so big. |

The camaro will easily be about 3600lbs.... it's not going to be as light as the old one was.
A 6.6L Hemi is nothing to Go Puff at, the 6.1L is under rated and more then likely this will be the same....

Unsubstantiated rumors I have come across have put the Camaro over 3800lbs.
Some recent Magazine tests (don't remember if it was Hot Rod or Automobile) of the Challenger were putting it's 0-60 at about 4.6 secs. |

Re: 6.6-liter Hemi in Store for 2008 Challenger?
I have the crazy idea that if GM took the time to make this Concept Camaro almost the same dimensions as the Mustang (abount 1 to 1/2 inch smaller in all directions)to compete more directly with he Mustangs current market. That they would also try to stick to the same weight if not a few pounds either wayt, im gessing over since it will have a bigger engine. So my educated guess would be 3600. The Challenger from what i've heard and found is listed at 4100, probably due to being wider, taller, and 1 foot longer.

i can't believe they said the Challenger would look EXACTLY like the concept.
they've already doomed it from the start. It'll sell fast and then sales will plummet. SUPER! |

Re: 6.6-liter Hemi in Store for 2008 Challenger?
That Challenger really looks "sweet". (Lets hope the 2 rednecks in the the Chrysler ads get a chance to drive 'em). I almost think the Challenger is more attractive than the Camaro. I think it remains "truer" to its roots. But being a GM guy, I'm gonna have to go with an SS Camaro, Hugger Orange, twin black stripes, Riccaro seats.
aahhhhh, testosterone is back.

Re: 6.6-liter Hemi in Store for 2008 Challenger?
i was surprised to learn that the LS2 weighs the same as an aluminum 4.6 mod motor...so no weight advantage for the ford there. the zeta chassis is portly...3800 lb is about right. besides, the camaro concept has a 110.5" wheelbase, and is 78" wide! there goes my fantasy of a nimble camaro.
it's funny...Dave Hill swore that the LS7 was maxed out. I'm sure I pissed Dave off when I challenged him on that. now Lutz admits there's 100 more hp, if need be. makes me wonder why they're pushing the ls9. i'd love to see a taller deck block with longer rods. fwiw, the mustang has a 200hp v6, 300 hp 4.6 v8, and a 500 hp 5.4...there's a perfect spot for a 5L 400 hp mod motor. it'll rev great, but won't keep up with the LS2. about this 6.6 hemi...4"x4", or possibly 4.125"x3.75"? larger valves. what's the max bore on the hemi? 4.2" for a siamesed bore block? the hemi belongs in the viper more than a lambo designed truck engine. i've heard rumors that the v-10 will be pushing 600hp soon. that'd leave room for a hemi base engine. perhaps? |
