    2014 Mazda CX-5 with 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine
    By Seyth Miersma
    Feb 5th 2013

Back in October, we compared the relative merits of two new and very good small crossovers: the 2013 Ford Escape and 2013 Mazda CX-5. The CX-5 we tested then had Mazda's 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine under its hood, and it managed to just edge out the EcoBoosted Ford despite being down by some 23 horsepower and 34 pound-feet of torque. Had it been available, the 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine that we recently had the opportunity to try out in the 2014 Mazda CX-5, it may have made that comparison even easier to call in the Japanese CUV's favor.

Clearly, if you're in the market for a reasonably sized crossover, the CX-5 should, at the very least, be on your test-drive list. The new engine offering will let buyers opt for a stronger powerplant, with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft on tap.

I'm not a huge fan of the interior dash layout, but I can live with it. However, I love the rest of the vehicle (the size, power, weight, mpg, etc) with the new 2.5. If we were in the market for a new vehicle now (we aren't, we just got a 2013 Sonic a few months ago), I'd have a tough time choosing between this, the new Mazda 6, the Buick Encore, and the Accord.

While waiting at a Mazda dealer a while back I browsed the lot and felt the CX5 is too expensive

Well that 2.5L remidies alot. I think this is hands down the best looking in it's class. And from what I have read, the best driving dynamics. Wonder if the 2.2L Diesel will come?

The CX-5 and Mazda 6 serve as alternate reality views where Ford continued working with Mazda
and delivers the next gen Escape and Fusion based on updated Mazda platforms..

We looked at the CX-5 after test driving a CR-V. At the same sticker price, the CX-5's interior seemed small and the materials cheap while the CR-V's seemed larger and of much higher quality. We disliked the interior so much, we didn't even want to test drive it.

That's funny you say that. Our opinions were exactly opposite. Last August, we were shopping for a small CUV and test drove the CX-5. I thought the interior was of very high quality and great materials. My wife took one look at the CR-V's interior and wouldn't even test drive it, she thought it was that bad (not quality, per se, but mostly the layout).

In the end, we bought a Ford Escape with the 2.0 Ecoboost. There was no comparison in power between it and the 2.0 in the CX-5. It really was the determining factor between the two and why we bought the Escape. It's funny they mention in the article that the CX-5 won their original comparison test between it and the Escape, but that was vs. the 1.6 Ecoboost. They say the 2.5 in the CX-5 would have made the CX-5's victory even easier. However, the right comparison would be the Mazda 2.5 vs. the Ford 2.0 Ecoboost. I'd like to see that comparison.

Re: 2014 Mazda CX-5 with 2.5-liter Skyactiv engine

I like how they try to compare this new engine to the Escapes base Escape engine (1.6L), yet no mention of the Escapes optional engine the 2.0L Ecoboost that makes 56 more horsepower and 85lb ft more than this 2.5L.

No stick option with 4WD for either engine... I like the styling a whole lot more than the Escape. The GS AWD model with this 2.5L starts at $30,650 in Canada although that is pretty well equipped.
