Re: 2009 VW Jetta TDi Information

I looked into the TDI's as a possible commuter vehicle. What I learned was unless you get the manual you won't get these high MPG's. They said the next generation TDI's will come with DSG transmissions, hopefully this will fix this issue. Second, the maintenance on these vehicles is very high. Word for word one member told me that except for the engine expect to be fixing many things. It seemed most people on that website know how to fix their own cars. Many of them were driving older VW's, maybe the reliability has come around in the past few years? Then of course you have to pay a premium for a TDI.

In the end however I think it’s just cheaper to go with a cheap sub compact gas car. The Cobalt for example will soon have this 1.4L Turbo that gets 40 MPG. It will get nearly the same MPG as the TDI, cost less, be more reliable, and the fuel it will use will be cheaper.

I have a 17 gallon tank and get 26 mpg in mixed driving. Premium is $4.15 in my area. That's $70.70 for 442 miles. The VW is looking pretty good. BTW, I'm on the waiting list for a Jetta TDI (#17 on the list in Jackson, MS). I'm waiting to hear some reviews over the next few months before I make any decisions. The diesel Accord looks very promising, too.

Is GM bringing any diesel cars (affordable) to the U.S. anytime soon?
