Re: 2009 VW Jetta TDi Information

FWIW - My 2007 GTI has 25,000 miles. Zero problems.

It's only a little bit hypocritical to be asking others to give GM another chance yet not let yourself give VW another one.

VW has earned there current terrible reliability record. GM does not have that as an issue anymore. I just don't see your point.

I am not saying I will not give VW another chance, but I am a bit wary .. maybe I will wait about a year or two before poncing so I can see how they hold up .. for the record I LOVE the way VW designs cars - it is exactly for my tastes - loaded with features and little creature spoils ... even in small cars ... but their 90's reliability fiasco does have me uneasy a little bit.

If the new Wagon proves to be a solid product I will be all over it .. Diesel and Wagon please ! In red or white.

First, I am a GM fan and will always be one.

Second, your statement is very ignorant. Have you owned one of the MKV VW's? Do you have any friend's that own one? I personally own one. I talked to people before I bought it because of VW's record. VW's "record" of past years has been just as bad as GM's "record". Both companies have turned a corner. I don't know which one has come farther but I do know that both are far better than they used to be.

So, my point is that it is 2008. Next year is 2009. My boss's 1997 Jetta had a lot of problems. My x-girlfriend's 1995 Cutlass had a lot of problems. Neither of those cars have affected what car I bought or will buy next. However, I will ask more equations about TODAY's reliability with both companies.

Everyone do yourself a favor and go and drive a new VW, new Ford, new Toyota, new GM, etc. Take the blinders off.

I did 12 gallon fill-up last night. It cost me 57 ****ing U.S. dollars.

Calculated economy: 27mpg (325 miles / 12 gallons)

I welcome diesel.

Re: 2009 VW Jetta TDi Information

Call me selfish, but I sure hope that the SportWagen TDI it doesn't fly of the lots--I'd like to give this car a chance but I am not willing to not pay over sticker, MSRP is as high as I'd be willing to go.

I read that they are only importing 7,000 TDI wagons per year. I hope they adjust that up, personally.

Who knows, maybe the wagon stigma, the low official EPA numbers, & VW's bad reputation will work in my favor.

Drive 100,000 miles. Jetta consumes 2,500 gallons, Cobalt consumes 3,333.

Gas costs 4.00 per gallon. Diesel costs 4.50.

So, over the life of the car, the Jetta costs $11,250 to fuel, while the Cobalt costs $13,333.

A difference of $2,083, which is what you'll save in fuel by buying the Jetta.

What's the price difference between a Jetta and a Cobalt?
In my neck of the woods diesel has been $.90-$1.00 more than regular unleaded for quite some time now. Which tilts the figures against the Jetta even more.

My last Ion fill-up was 11gal/383.6 miles for 34.87mpg (dang A/C). It cost me $42.20. My SC2 did 293miles on 8gal ( the gauge is really inaccurate after it drops below 1/2 tank so I fill it then) for 36.63 mpg, cost me $29.92. I am not getting rid of either of these two cars! They're paid for, so all the money that'd go toward a car payment is available for fuel, plus then all I owe on is the house.

Igor
I bet it will get around 38. My dad averages 50 with his and gets around 1000KM to a tank every time.

Early 4th Gen Golfs and Jettas (1999.5-2001s) were POS. VW Realized they were making crap, and stepped it up since. My moms 2000 Golf was an awful car, while my Dads 2006 Jetta hasnt had any problems.

Re: 2009 VW Jetta TDi Information

It's kind of sad to hear that the new TDI is going to get worse fuel economy than my 99.5 Jetta TDI. Personally I average about 48mpg on my daily commute to and from work. While I realize that diesel is currently higher than gas, I find that flexibility of a diesel to be a big seller. If VW will only warranty their cars when running on B80 to B100, they could corner the market when algae diesel becomes widely available. Unlike ethanol (which I love as a fuel alternative), you can run this car on renewable fuel (biodiesel) and not lose any fuel economy. Come-on HoosierRon and back me up on this one...TDIs can be another path to energy independence.

I still hate diesels, low revving rattle snakes.
I don't care that it gets that kind of gas mileage.
When they are even slightly below operating temps they smell AWEFUL and make me ill even on new cars... And they have found the soot particulates to be so small that they are very highly carcenogenic. (spelling?)

Re: 2009 VW Jetta TDi Information

My wife had a 2001 Jetta TDI. It really did get 48mpg just like these other guys are saying. I checked it every time we filled up....The car was indeed a pile of junk, but the VW service department was incredible. My problems that made me get rid of it were:

1. The brake switch that makes you press the brake pedal before you can take the shifter out of park was GARBAGE. It was a free warranty piece, but the replacements were just as defective. Ours was replaced 8 times. 8! You can't take the car out of park when it brakes.

2. The timing BELT needed to be changed every 30,000 miles. Of course, that also means a new tentioner, AND water pump, so it is expensive as hell. Meanwhile, GM makes its cars with timing CHAINS so you don't get ripped off like this. I paid for that crap twice, and said forget it. I will never own another car with a freaking timing belt.

3. The diesel pump at the gas station is always COVERED with slick, slimy diesel. Look next time, and you will see the ground by the diesel pump is slick and black. I guess the diesel does not evaporate like gasoline does, so whatever is spilled just makes a mess. I could not fill her car up without getting back in reeking of diesel.

THere is an enormous following for these cars and their owners tweak them for even better mileage. A friend of mine has an 03 TDI and he REGULARLY gets 65mpg and he does a lot of driving. So using your formula:

100,000/65= 1540 Gal (roughly)
1540*$4.50= $6930

Thats a bit different.

Go drive one, you are thinking of the Rabbit and Golf diesels of the 70's and 80's. VW's diesels are the benchmark for diesel passenger cars, I was very surprised how quiet and responsive the TDI's are. The emission systems of the new VW diesels cut particulates drastically and are no worse than your average car.
