2009 VW Jetta TDi Information

Credit to member jdsfrm, who posted this info in another thread. I think this info is worthy of its own thread:

Both models will be available this August.

While the Environmental Protection Agency estimates the Jetta TDI at an economical 29 mpg City and 40 mpg Highway, Volkswagen went a step further to show the true fuel economy of the Jetta TDI. Leading third-party certifier, AMCI, has tested the Jetta TDI and found it performed 24 percent better in real world conditions, achieving 38 mpg in the City and 44 mpg on the Highway

Seriously 38mpg city if it has a 15 gallon tank that's 570 miles round town crap that would last 3 weeks for me!!!

^^ if the 38mpg pans out (I doubt it) then I could even justifythe price of gas.

If only VW did not have such a horrid reliability record ... my family has had some truly awful VW experiences.

but one cannot scoff at 38/44 mpg

Re: 2009 VW Jetta TDi price, availability, and other details

IMO the SportWagen has nice size, good styling, plenty of utility, comfortable, plenty of standard and available features, pleasant feel, good handling. That alone describes A LOT of cars, but what differentiates the SportWagen from the rest is that along with the above it is economical AND affordable.

One other thing to keep in mind: 140HP might look like it will be anemic, & measured full tilt acceleration won't be anything to write home about. But, with 236 lb-ft this car will drive well in normal traffic, & feel good to drive at part throttle.

I currently do ~1,000 miles per month, maybe a little less. so with a potential real world 38 city versus the ~27 MPG I've been getting with the Civic, I'd only save ~11 gallons per month. Not a big deal, but I've been planning on replacing the Civic in the next few months, and this would be an all around sensible, attractive, and enjoyable choice for me, provided I don't catch convertible feaver or something.

Ming, Ming, where art Thou? It seems this is a car you would appreciate. Just imagine if GM had a coparable vehicle--I envision a practical, handsome Delta II station wagon (i.e. NOT HHR, ugh), something along the lines of a modern version of the Celebrity you have mentioned. Except, with current diesel technology you could have your cake and eat it too with regards to the combination of power and efficiency, unlike the larger Iron Duke applications of the '80's.

Ok... let's think for a minute, people.

Assume this Jetta gets 40mpg, average.

Assume your average Cobalt gets 30mpg.

Drive 100,000 miles. Jetta consumes 2,500 gallons, Cobalt consumes 3,333.

Gas costs 4.00 per gallon. Diesel costs 4.50.

So, over the life of the car, the Jetta costs $11,250 to fuel, while the Cobalt costs $13,333.

A difference of $2,083, which is what you'll save in fuel by buying the Jetta.

What's the price difference between a Jetta and a Cobalt?

Don't forget resale value.

A 100k mile Cobalt would worth basically nothing. A 100k mile diesel Jetta could still be sold for a nice sum.

Diesel VWs usually retain their values really well.

You can't really compare two unequal cars to see if diesel is worth it. You need to compare it to the other 4 cylinder Jetta to get a fair comparison.

TDIs have great resale. Say i 2005 jetta TDI, with the old diesel motor, that had 40K miles on it. It was going for $28,000 which has to be 105% of its new price.

I don't know if you are aware of this, but the majority of the public does NOT really feel that great about diesel cars (still). Only the people here at GMI and other car forums appreciate them.

So, for resale value, it's hard to tell, especially on a VW. Like it was mentioned before, if it weren't for the 'horrible' reliability record, it would be very tempting. It is an attractive price, BUT, it is a VW after all

Yep. I did not have a positive quality experience with my 2000 GTI. However, those are darned good mileage figures, and all the reviews I've seen/read on the new TDI say it's a hoot to drive. I'm hoping one of my local dealers gets one in soon so I can get some first-hand seat time.

Well, whether or not the public en mass appreciates diesel cars, VW diesel cars really do have great resale values (check classifieds).

TDIs tend to get snapped up quickly, even before this gas crunch.

Re: 2009 VW Jetta TDi Information

^^^ Especially Wagons - they do hold 90-100+% of their value - I tried to buy a used one about 2 years ago - and decided that a 2003 Jetta Wagon TDI with 80k miles is simply NOT woth $18k ... bought an almost new fully loaded mazda3s for less.

Re: 2009 VW Jetta TDi Information

Even if you presume the Jetta TDi and the Cobalt to be equally attractive, to some degree the value calculation is absurd, because for most people a a good used car is a better value than even the least expensive new car. Heck, the Prius can be a questionable choice in terms of value but they sell very well.

Not only is resale value high on the diesel models here in the US, I recall they were typically excluded from any incentives the gas models were subject to. This could have been due to scarcity of the diesel models, but hopefully the supply will be plentiful.

I personally would be willing to pay ~$25K for a well equipped Jetta TDi, whereas I personally find the Cobalt unattractive at any price. I know there are folks out there just like me, too.
