2009 Corolla to get worse mileage?

According to http://pressroom.toyota.com/Releases...T2007102438118

Quote:
The Standard, LE and XLE models will be equipped with an all-new 1.8-liter engine. The 16-valve, DOHC four-cylinder engine with Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence), produces 132 hp at 6,000 rpm and 128 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. Corolla models equipped with the 1.8-liter engine will achieve preliminary EPA city/highway fuel economy ratings of 27/35 mpg.
According to the EPA, , the 2007 Corolla manual gets 28/37. The auto gets 26/35. So if the press release is talking about the manual, it means the Corolla's mileage is going down.

On top of that, the Corolla will have an optional engine:
Quote:
Preliminary EPA city/highway fuel economy for the 2.4-liter engine is 22/30 mpg.
Toyota better sell a lot of Priuses and Yarises to get to the new 35 mpg CAFE.

The Corolla will have a NAV option so you will have no problem finding a gas station...

I think the press release is intentioally vague. In that paragraph you quoted the release was talking about the AT with figures of 27/35. In the following sentence it mentioned that there also would be a 5 speed manual offered but no ratings were mentioned.

If the 27/35 is referencing the AT then it's a slight improvement over the 2008 AT of 26/35.

And it said the numbers were the preliminary estimates. The final decision is up to the EPA.

Wait til they announce the price for this puppy. You're gonna have to LOVE the Corolla to get one of these with Navi, Leather, JBL + BT. I'm thinking mid $24K range!!!!!

It really will be a mini-Camry down to having the same engine, except at a $2000 to $3000 discount over the 2.4L XLE Camry with the same equipment. It'll be an interesting experiment that's for certain.

For those who crave just a bit more horsepower and torque, there is the 2.4-liter engine.
Wow... they should have at least tried to make it look more powerful... thos who crave JUST a BIT more...

Not the usual Toyota exageration on this one at least!

I disagree. What it says is: "A five-speed manual transmission is standard with the 1.8-liter engine, and a four-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission (ECT) will also be available."

Now when you are telling the world what the mileage of your new Corolla will be, are you going to tell them the higher mileage of the standard transmission, or the lower mileage of the optional transmission? It seems reasonable to me to conclude that the 27/35 mileage is in referene to the standard transmission. If so, it gets worse mileage than the current vehicle.

Did it gain a lot of weight? The current Corolla weighs 2500 lbs
And considering tha the automatic what most people are intrested in, don't you think they posting prelimary numbers for that instead?

It wouldn't surprise me. Look what they did to the xB's gas mileage.

Yeah, it also gained 500-600 lbs from the previous one. And its stuck with that horrible 2.4 Toyota motor.

Re: 2009 Corolla to get worse mileage?

I think Toyota didnt do a very good job with the Corolla. It looks almost exactly like the Camry, plus getting worse gas mileage then the outgoing model. I think the new Matrix looks worse then what we've seen of the new Vibe. The Vibe looks much more sporty and better perportioned. I just wonder if the Matrix and Vibe will have the same interior like the outgoing models.

Re: 2009 Corolla to get worse mileage?

I KNEW IT! I've been saying the ecotec engines are great all along, but no one listens. All they do is bitch about it's "poor fuel economy". Yeah I agree GM needs a 1.8 (preferably one derived from the ecotec) but that's not the point.

158 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. 22/30 (Toyota)
171 hp and 167 lb-ft of torque. 22/32 (Ecotec)

What's this? An engine that is more powerful and efficient than the Toyota equivalent? In a car?! Well I'll be dammed.

What's really interesting is there are quite a few people who claim they consistently get ~ 40 MPG with their ecotecs. And I've heard of people getting 37 MPG in the larger ecotec vehicles (G6, malibu).

GM does. The Astra is a 1.8 Ecotec 4 making 140 hp.

Indeed, and hopefully this won't be the only use of this engine stateside. I hope once Astra production moves to Mexico we'll maybe see a higher mileage Cobalt variant using the 1.8.
