2007 Mini Cooper, Cooper S (Mk II) unveiled

(The Competition)

2007 Mini Cooper, Cooper S (Mk II) unveiled

BMW has released official images of the 2007 Mini Cooper (Mk II). As previously reported, the car will be offered in Mini Cooper (120 hp) and Cooper S (175 hp) guise. Both cars are powered by a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine. The Mini Cooper reaches its peak 120 horsepower output at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 118 lb-ft at 4,250 rpm. It features Valvetronic technology for an added edge over the previous model. The turbocharged Cooper S makes 175 hp at 5,500 rpm, and peak torque of 177 lb-ft comes at just 1,600 rpm. While the 2.76-inch-longer exterior is mostly evolutionary, BMW describes the new interior as "revolutionary." For increased safety, curtain airbags now protect all passengers. More details are expected soon. For now, have a look at the gallery after the jump…

If you like the current one, you will like the new one.

I'm interested in seeing the fuel economy. Weight is going to be almost the same as the current model, and so is power. But with direct injection on the engines, MPG should be at least 2-3 mpg better than current models.

I don't think this should be called (MK II). It looks an awful lot like the out-going version (with a few tweaks). This car has to be a hard car to refresh the design since it's a "Retro" look. I like it, just IMO, not that much of a change.

for those that missed this ... there will be no more Mini .... the MkII is a MINI ... aways fully capitalized ... I have no isdea how they decided that, but do it is .. also provides nice easy distinction between Mini (MkI) and MINI (MkII)

just FYI

I think on the Cooper S gets the DI engine. From the full article, "Despite the car's increased measurements, its weight has been reduced by 192 lbs for the Cooper S manual, 72 lbs for the Cooper S auto, 181 lbs for the Cooper manual, and 49 lbs for the Cooper auto." That's some decent weight loss for a car that is already light.

I really doubt the Mini will go RWD. It has always been FWD. Great that they dropped some weight, though they still are a bit heavy for their size.

If that new interior is high quality (the current one is crap), and the window problems are fixed, then I might stay with the brand. Too bad they're keeping the Toyota diesel instead of upgrading to the PSA engine.

Very nice, evolutionary upgrades. I never thought it was too short, just too narrow, but I guess it's supposed to be MINIaturized.

Re: 2007 Mini Cooper, Cooper S (Mk II) unveiled

A nice enough, and doubtless thorough, knowing BMW, revision.

I still have fond memories of my dad's 1969 Austin Mini Mk II, in white with a black roof. That car makes BMW's second generation interpretation look like a bloated, cynical, marketing-led effort, though.

Sir Alec Issigonis' original of 1959 was a masterpiece of innovation and space-efficiency . . . he was a true engineering genius. What a damned shame he isn't still around to show BMW AG how small cars are really done.

Still, I wish them success with it.

Interior still looks like a joke. Honestly is this a joke? The car looks the same as 06.
