Strike imminent at GM Daewoo

South Korea's GM Daewoo workers vote to strike for wage increase

SEOUL (MarketWatch) -- Unionized workers of South Korea's GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. announced Wednesday they would stage a strike unless the company agrees to their wage demands.

In a ballot held Tuesday, about 66% of the 8,182 union workers who voted agreed to down tools if wage negotiations do not reach a resolution, union spokesman Kim Yun-Bog said.

The union of GM Daewoo, a Korean unit of General Motors Corp, has called for an 8.8% wage hike for this year.

GM Daewoo workers also called on the company to pay a special bonus equivalent to four months' salary to recognize their contribution to the automaker's strong performance last year, said Kim.

Move production from S.Korea.

And people on this site thought the UAW was bad! Flawed as it is, the UAW today is nowhere near as aggressive and militant as the unions in South Korea.

Definitely right, the unions there are much worse. Things seem to get messier there a lot easier. This would help to get rid of the price advantage of building in Korea, and I could see the same happen in China and India eventually too.

I still think if you're going to go to the third world, skip manufacturing in Asia and stick to Mexico. Its almost as cheap with a lot less labor fights. Not to mention the logistics are much easier.

In South Korea, auto workers make between $5.90 - $9.40 an hour. http://www.amrc.org.hk/5404.htm

GM might as well give them 8.8% more. Given how much DaeWoo has saved GM in the last year and a half I think it's the least they could do.

They can't give in too quickly, or next time they'll want even more.

That what they thought about the jobs bank too, and the cradle to grave pensions in the US...

Look at their standards of living though. 6-10 bucks an hour is really good for them. GM needs to negotiate like they are doing here now or pack up and relocate. I'm sure there are alot of South Koreans that would gladly take the place of the union workers in a heartbeat!

Well at least 9.50 an hour isn't as bad for 60 dollars total employment benefits an hour for UAW workers.

Re: Strike imminent at GM Daewoo

If they demand a 9 percent increase in pay and a bonus of 1/3 of their salary when GM is bleeding like a stuck pig, imagine what they'll demand when GM actually turns a profit.

This is why people can't stand unions. This is utterly ridiculous. Some people still believe that GM is headed for bankruptcy, and these yahoos want to strike because GM won't give them a fat bonus and huge pay raise.

Whatever. I think this is an example of both failing to see the forrest through all the trees and throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Re: Strike imminent at GM Daewoo

If I were GM I would give it to them. Then start making plants around the globe more flexible to build the products that are made in S. Korea. Then when they start it up again and believe me they will you can tell them were to stick it the next time around.

Re: Strike imminent at GM Daewoo

They need to head this off quickly --- if they allow a strike it might threaten whatever growth and progress Chevy has been experiencing in key markets.
