Sales in China Reach 3 Million for 6 months of 2007, SAIC-GM JV Top @ 800K

Beijing, China, 10 July
MacauHub

Sales of passenger vehicles in China reached 3.08 million units between January and June of 2007, representing a year on year rise of 22.3 percent, China’s Association Automotive Manufacturers announced Monday.

In the period, sales of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) rose 39.3 percent, totaling 158,000 units, according to the same figures.

The Shanghai Automotive Industry, a partnership between General Motors and Volkswagen AG, was the largest car manufacturer in China, having sold 800 (edit: thousand) units, according to the association.

umm... how did SAIC sell 800 million if the total sales was 3.08 million??

i'm assuming they mean 800 thousand, which sounds about right given how many different brands there are. but regardless, i hope GM does well in China, it (and India) are the future of the auto industry.

I'm happy to see GM sitting atop the sales chart in China, the world's second largest car market. There's absolutely nothing wrong with holding that title, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with its pro-growth/ pro-profit strategy. It's kinda refreshing, actually.

Quote:
...China had a total of 38 million cars on the road at the end of 2006, with the market still having room to grow, as there is an average of three cars to every 100 Chinese, against a world average of 12 vehicles per person.
Interesting, promising tidbit of information. GM looks well-poised to capitalize on it, too.

I too, was wondering why the SAIC jv's were totalled together. VW is one of the bigger manufacturers in China, and GM also. So, why were these combined together? That means GM itself actally only had somewhere around 10% share, right?????

800 million? GM would certainly not be #2 in the world...and not have many of the problems that it current has now. Too bad its not 800 million, but then global warming would happen in like 3 seconds though. lol

I'll give you the figures tomorrow if I can find them. I think I saw them yesterday but I have been busier than a one armed paper hanger. I am having a beer at the pub at the moment.
