Chrysler, Ford and General Motors Applaud Passage of US-Peru Free Trade Agreement

- The Automotive Trade Policy Council (ATPC) and its member companies -- Chrysler LLC, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors Corporation -- congratulate the House of Representatives on successful passage today of the U.S.-Peru Free Trade Agreement.

"The passage by the U.S. House of Representatives of the U.S.-Peru Free Trade Agreement is a win-win for Peru and the U.S.,"
said Stephen J. Collins, ATPC President. "We look forward to improving trade between our two markets. Implementing a free trade agreement with Peru will stimulate local market vehicle sales there, both by contributing to improved economic growth and by increasing the attractiveness of U.S.-sourced vehicles."

GM can't afford to be choosy about where sales come from. It's one less car sold to the competition

So i guess we will start seeing a lot more imports of Peruvian potatoes and onions???

It'll be great to see if GM can make more sales occur in Peru with this Free Trade Agreement. Maybe we can see some H2's make some Andes Mountain climbs...

I wonder if folks in Washington see this as some kind of a consolation prize to the stalled (or abandoned?) FTAA --- the "Free Trade Area of the Americas" --- that was supposed to encompass all of North, Central, and South America minus Cuba and Venezuela....

I know we just got CAFTA, but wonder how long it will be til we see something similar in South America to compliment MERCOSUR. Brazil was looking for the US to end subsidies to farmers and Venezuela was looking to kill the entire thing by offering oil money to regimes in Bolivia and Paraguay, etc.

Interesting to see how geopolitics plays into a manufacturer's plans...

Most of the vehicles in Peru are RHD cars imported from Japan then the steering wheel is modified with a chain mechanism to LHD. Sounds fun right...

Not the best new car market ...

Maybe not yet. The question I have, is whether General Motors will start building cars in Peru. I expected more Union response to this announcement.

This seems to be quite a risky move......being as certain nations in that region are prone to nationalizing certain industries 'for the sake of their economy'....

I hope our NA market doesn't come to heavily rely on anything coming out of that country......

I fail to see how importing stuff from South America is better than importing stuff from Asia.
