New Daewoo Gentra X Launched In Korea

http://www.gmdaewoo.co.kr/gmmcc/gmmcc.jsp?carID=gentraX

The new 1.2 L DOHC engine is revealed to be S-TEC II, an update of the older S-TEC engine used in the previous-generation Aveo5. The new engine can be mated with automatic transmission.

The instrument cluster is the same as in the Gentra, not the Pontiac-style one shown in Frankfurt. Options include alloy wheels, MP3 CD, and vinyl leather seats with heating. No automatic climate control; this would probably be reserved for 1.6 L version that is scheduled to appear later this year.

GM Daewoo Launches Gentra X

Seoul , Korea – GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GM Daewoo) today launched the successor to the Kalos hatchback. Dubbed the Gentra X, the new model derives its name from the word “eXtreme.” It is the first member of the next generation of sportier, younger and more stylish GM Daewoo vehicles. The Gentra X goes on sale in Korea starting October 15.

“With the Gentra sedan, we proved that GM Daewoo could offer much more than one would expect of a conventional small car,” said Michael Grimaldi , President and CEO of GM Daewoo . “The Gentra X hatchback goes one step further, making it the smart choice for those who want an economical yet stylish and fun-to-drive vehicle.”

The Gentra X features a striking exterior. The bold front styling is characterized by a trendy wide chrome-rimmed grille that is accentuated by a prominent air inlet. The dynamic detailing includes large curved clear-glass headlamps and fog lamps that project like spotlights from the lower part of the bumper. The hood follows the lines of the radiator grille. Eye-catching contours, which flow from the hood to the A-pillar, complete the sporty look. T he back of the car is dominated by a solid bumpe r and round taillamps .

The Gentra X has grown slightly and is four centimeters longer than its predecessor. Its segment-leading overall height of 1,505 millimeters yields a high seating position that provides passengers a better view of the road ahead .

Inside, the Gentra X clearly breaks away from the typical small car. Its modern high-quality instrument panel is divided into four chrome-trimmed controls and a center console with striking air vents, a fully integrated audio unit, and large user-friendly air-conditioning dials. The smooth surfaces and the soft finish of both the instrument panel and the upper half of the door panel are pleasant to the touch. The door design features convenient gooseneck handles.

The Gentra X is powered by a new 1.2-liter DOHC engine that produces maximum output of 85 ps at 6,200 rpm and maximum torque of 11.5 kg∙m at 4,200 rpm. The powerful new engine’s fuel efficiency of 17.5 km/ℓ with a manual transmission and 15.4 km/ℓ with an automatic transmission tops its predecessor. Despite the fact that performance has improved by 14 ps, the new engine consumes less fuel, achieving another kilometer per liter of efficiency. A new 1.6-liter engine will be available starting next year.

The Gentra X offers strong passenger protection. Over 40 percent of its passenger cell is made of high-strength steel. For enhanced side protection, the B-pillar is made of three steel plates of different thicknesses. The plates are welded together so that in the event of a side impact, the B-pillar moves like a pendulum rather than being folded and protruding into the passenger compartment.

Providing additional safety are dual front air bags, seat-belt pretensioners with load limiters, knee bolsters and a collapsible steering wheel. The passenger’s seat front air bag comes standard in all Gentra X trim levels, which is unique among small cars sold in Korea.

The Gentra X has a number of amenities that are generally found in larger, higher-priced vehicles. These include a driver’s seat armrest, intermittent wipers, seat-belt height adjusters , and p ower door locks and power windows.

The Gentra X with a 1.2-liter engine and manual transmission comes in two trim levels. The SE retails for KRW 8.28 million and the SX for KRW 8.49 million.

GM Daewoo Auto & Technology was established in 2002. It has five manufacturing facilities in Korea as well as an assembly facility in Vietnam. In addition, GM Daewoo provides market and brand-specific vehicle kits for assembly at GM facilities in China, Thailand, India, Colombia and Venezuela. In 2006, GM Daewoo sold in Korea and exported more than 1.52 million units, including CKD products. GM Daewoo now produces vehicles and kits for Chevrolet, Buick, Opel, Vauxhall, Pontiac, Holden and Suzuki that are offered in more than 150 markets on six continents. Imported GM products from the Cadillac and Saab premium brands are sold in Korea through GM AutoWorld retailers. More information on GM Daewoo and its operations can be found on the company’s website at www.gmdaewoo.co.kr

Re: The new Aveo hatchback has been launched on the domestic Korean market as Gentra X

I agree, that Gentra front end looks worlds better than the Chevrolet schnoze. Still have to see it in person, but the Daewoo version is much tidier.

That's a nice little website! I love that they have the G2X (aka Sky) so prominently displayed!

Re: The new Aveo hatchback has been launched on the domestic Korean market as Gentra

I'm willing to bet this is the "final" look of the bumper/grille and it will be used in the production Aveo 5-door as well.

If you compare European Kalos/Aveo 5 door and Gentra/Aveo 4 door with their Korean and Canadian counterparts, you'll see that bumpers are exactly the same in both Chevrolet and Daewoo versions (and Pontiac version of the sedan), and the only difference is the grille. I see no reason why GM Daewoo would make a different bumper design for the Chevrolet version this time.

PS. You might recall that Indian Optra sedan and Chinese Epica now feature different bumpers, but these are produced locally and such redesigns would not impact Korean logistics.

Re: The new Aveo hatchback has been launched on the domestic Korean market as Gentra

I'd wish the Aveo would revert to the Gentra X front end, but I believe this is not happening - the Frankfurt Aveo was clearly the final production version. Do remember EUDM Aveos will now be made @ the FSO, so I believe the bumper will be less of a problem. Even so, this is not that impossible to make two types of bumpers.

I doubt a final production version would have no front license plate holder... and vertically misaligned middle bar looks horrible IMHO, they'd better lower it.

I couldn't see how it could have looked better, but, having done a quick choppy thing, it is a lot more 'flowing' across the front...

I like the Chevy a lot better. The Daewoo looks like a been-there-done-that Korean car. At least in the U.S., it will not get anyone to leave their Fit.

I think the Daewoo version is rather handsome; While the Chevy version is still taking me some time to get used to. Good post Dmitri.

It woul look much better if they just put the golden bowtie in the center of a Gentra X grille with no bars to support it, like in the 2008 Matiz, or just copied the bowtie and chrome bars from the current Aveo 4-door...

Still, the grille of the original Daewoo Kalos concept is what I like the most

In Europe the car will have two engines, the 1,2 DOHC with 85 HP, and the next generation of the existing 1,4 DOHC, which will have VVT and will have 98 HP.
Auto A/C and 4 speed auto transmission, will be available with the 1,4 DOHC engine in Europe.
The 1,6 engine will be not offered in Europe , only US, Canada, LA, and it is also an updated version of the existing 1,6 DOHC.

Misunderstanding alert -

What I mena to say, though I appreciate it isn't clear, is that I could figuratively imagine what it might look like with a lower bar, not I thought it was a stunning car, because it's hideous.
