GM wants to boost sales of sports cars in Romania

Quote:
GM's portfolio includes models such as the Opel GT and Chevrolet Corvette, and will soon feature the new, 2009 Chevrolet Camaro. These can complement the GM portfolio in Romania, and improve the image of the Opel and Chevrolet brands.
Quote:
Although GM's Chevrolet Corvette is not currently officially imported in Romania, the official representative of Cadillac - Radacini Motors - is preparing to take on the task.
Quote:
Romania is the seventh most important market in Europe for GM's Chevrolet global brand in terms of volume, and the third most-important across Eastern Europe, after Russia and Ukraine.

In the first six months of 2007, the best-selling Chevrolet model in Romania was the Aveo, one of the main competitors to the domestically-produced Dacia Logan. Aveo found 4,215 homes, an increase of 161% against the same period last year.

Re: GM wants to boost sales of sports cars in Romania

This is interesting to me. I didn't know that Chevy had such a foothold in Romania. I'm going to Romania in less than a month, can't wait to see the mix of cars there compared to the last time I was there.

One of my neighbors was Romanian. She was a 80 year old fortune teller.

To be honest, I think she was a witch.

Sounds more like she was Roma than Romanian. The Roma are the group generally stereotyped as gypsies. They moved from northern India around 1,000 years ago. What we call Romanians today are the ancient Dacian people.

I wonder if the Romanians will start complaining that GM is keeping all the good cars in states and not importing them.

Sounds like Romania's middle class is starting to pick up. It's one thing to sell a bunch of Aveos, but I wonder how many can afford a Corvette?

Again, the word "Chevrolet" in Europe translates to "Daewoo". All current Chevy products sold anywhere in Europe are rebadged Daewoos. The Corvette is not a Chevy in Europe-it's it's own marquee.

Re: GM wants to boost sales of sports cars in Romania

This is a bit interesting, the 3rd most important Eastern European country wants to boost their sales of sport cars? I wouldn't expect sport cars to be upped in any nation other than the nations of the Middle East or ones that have a lot of oil reserves. Not unless Romania has a lot of oil that I don't know about.

Isn't Romania called "Dacia" or am I imagining things (or have I been under a rock since Roman [Caesar-style] times).

So many "R-O-M-A" words

Man, I hope the Corvette becomes as big of an icon in Europe as it is here... and that it reflects well on GM and gains them some much needed credebility.

Re: GM wants to boost sales of sports cars in Romania

Romanians are actually a mix of Dacian and Roman after Trajan conquered and settled Dacia in 106 AD. The word Rroma and Romanian are now purely a linguistic coincidence (granted of perhaps the same indo-european root).

ProjectRS, not sure when you went last but old diesel Mercs are all but gone. Dacias of all kind are still predominant, followed closely by compact and midsized Citroen, Peugeot, Renault, VW, Skoda, Opel, etc.
The "mafia guys" (of which there are many) drive this...

Geez, four SLRs in the same parking lot? I like the Aveo next to the Bentley.
