GM sets a new sales record in Latin America

A new sales record in LAAM. It's nice to see that my country is helping GM's turnaround.

Re: GM sets a new sales record!

I can name a few companies that have had better profits / sales. Exxon Mobil, Ford (22.1 billion annual profit in 1998), Citigroup just off the top of my head.

Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East? That's a pretty big geographical range for one unit. Good news, though.

Re: GM sets a new sales record!

Not bad. Could certainly have been worse.

Marketshare, which the most accurate way to measure an automaker's success IMHO (unless there's unusual circumstances like a firesale), was up 0.2% for that quarter.

Since barely treading water is, in this day and age, a feat for GM, that's good.

Just curious, is this part of a deep investigation of irrelevance?

Re: GM sets a new sales record in Latin America

GM has pretty much a monopoly in Latin America. That is until Chinese or Indian cars become more attractive and reliable. Or the Japanese figure out a way to to sell cheap cars over there.
Problem for GM: increasing prices, dealer crooks, expensive techno parts, cars that aren't tough enough, reliability. Those folks put up with a lot of problems with cars. If someone can sell them solid cars that last and cost little, GM will be in trouble.

With GM's growth in Asia and in smaller car segments, there's reason to think GM can keep up with/lead the competition in this region.

I wasn't aware that 16.3% share could be interpreted as a monopoly. I suppose anything's possible. More likely, they may be providing some of what people want, especially since there are Asian makes there already. I'm not convinced that GM is just biding time till the Asian makers figure out how to crush them there.

It's GM's "rest of the world" unit. Everything that wasn't worthy of it's own unit (sales-wise) was stuffed into it.

Neither. Local news paper had a cover story all about Exxon Mobil's recent sales brake through, and had a panel about previous records set by companies. Ford was sitting there at number 6 out of the 10 (4 of which were Exxon).

Why did it not surprise me that you even mentioned Ford here.

Well great for GM, maybe eventually they will do the same in North America, seems that is the only market that GM isn't growing.

Re: GM sets a new sales record in Latin America

It always sounds good that GM can do great in some markets in the world. I wish they could transfer their successes to this market and the Europe one too.
