Is it me or does it seem like GM is creating waves overseas so that they can have a tsunami in N.America?

Re: GM India sales up 12%

Think about it. You have immigrants to the U.S. who have only ever really heard of Toyota or Honda and when you go to immigrant towns like a Chinatown all you see are Toyohondassans side by side.

Building Chevrolet as a world brand that stands for value, style and getting name recognition as a world player is going to help influence communities even in the U.S. indirectly.

I agree. This Global strategy will certainly reap rewards in the long term both here and abroad.

Annualized sales of 54,000 in a country with about 1 billion people.

Not impressive.

Lots of room for growth though

I also agree, but it is too bad that certain foreign brands seem to be too well established to change... For example Daewoo could be Chevy in Korea also, but I think there would be backlash. Also, the whole Opel/Vauxhall/Saturn thing is working well, but it would be nice to see them all as, say Opels, but again, you'd lose brand recognition/loyalty in the other markets. Down the road, a similar thing might be said for the Holden/Pontiac lines? Oh well, GM is still doing well with globalizing platforms between these brands, and is establishing more Chevy, Caddy and Buick presence in other markets where it does make good sense.

Exactly, and even Ford is a world brand but too bd people can see there offerings in america are less than stellar compared to over seas.

Also does anyone know how much total vehicles sales increased for the month in India over last year? If they increased over 12% then this actually pretty bad news as GM is losing market share.

That's exactly right, it's a good way to help encourage sales in the US. The same will probably happen with Buick since it does so well in China.

Re: GM India sales up 12%

GM needs something like a modern day Ford Model T or like the old Fiat 500. A small inexpensive car to put "The world on wheels". I don't think the Aveo is up to that. Something smaller and revolutionary. Top speed and engine power would be secondary to utility and affordability. Could sell millions with the right car.

Thing is, Buick can't have a totally different and dowdy silver-hair set lineup or styling duds here in the USA like the Terraza or it will kill any potential goodwill a Chinese immigrant might have for the brand.

From the news it appears GM may offer more China Buick-like styling, but until that happens I don't expect cars like the Detroit-designed LaCrosse to lure any Chinese Americans in to dealerships.

I still think Buick could do with an Excelle-like vehicle here too, if it has any intention of lowering the age of its buyers. For now the "Buick fan" is past retirement age, with a few used-purchasing young guys mostly inspired by Buicks that haven't been built for 20 years like the Grand Nationals that they can fix up and cruise around in like the two brothers in the Supernatural TV show. And the odd young person attracted to Buick styling for some unknown reason like nostalgia for his dad's 1996 Riviera. Like I wrote before, Buick's loyal fan base in the U.S. is primarily made up of Octogenarians and Contrarians from what I've seen.

Cars aren't that big sellers in India anyhow. There is barely enough room on the roads to take a car, most of the time you'd be better off taking a bus, a rickshaw, or just plain walking.
