GM India aims for 70% sales jump this year, Buoyed by positive response to Spark

GM India aims for 70% sales jump this year
www.financialexpress.com

NEW DELHI, JUNE 9: Buoyed by response to its hatchback Chevrolet 'Spark', General Motors India today said it was looking for about 70 per cent growth in sales this calendar year.

"Despite the industry slowing down, we have been able to achieve robust growth. This year we are looking at selling about 66,000 units as compared to 38,800 last year," GM India Director Marketing Anisha Motwani told reporters here at the launch of the company's first diesel offering in sedan Optra Magnum.

She said with Spark doing well, the company was aiming to sell 18,000 units of the car, while 24,000 unit sales were expected from multi-utility vehicle Tavera in 2007.

"About 8,000 units are expected from Optra range, 70 per cent of which will be from the diesel version, while 16,000 units are targeted from Aveo, Aveo-UVA and Chevrolet SRV combined," Motwani said, adding a new petrol version of the Optra sedan would be launched soon.

The Optra Magnum, powered by a two-litre turbocharged common rail direct injection engine has been introduced at a competitive price starting from Rs 8.74 lakh to Rs 9.99 lakh.

Are they speaking about the new Beat derived Spark or the current yawner design?

I've never seen the new Beat-derived Matiz/Spark unless I missed it.

And check out some of the offerings in the Indian market before calling the Spark a yawner...especially the first link!

Well in India they have some of the ugliest and old looking cars in the modern world. I don't know why they are between some decent markets but they seem to like simple older fashion designs. At least that is my take after seeing a lot of what is offered there.

It's a very conservative society. More flashy automobiles will take some time to catch on. I happen to work with a lot of folks from India, and they all drive previous-generation Camrys and Accords. The only exception is one chap who rolls around in a 2005 GTO, and I guess it's not really an exception, considering how that car is styled!

Hummm so true they seems to be the popular cars for most immigrants from almost every other country to the US. They all seem to buy older Hondas and especially Toyota's. Interesting I wonder if GM could find a way to get these consumers new to America is a Cheap Chevy to get them off the line in an American product. You know find a way to get into the cultures realm and introduce a cheap gas saving product. After they have been here a short time they have the regular bias against American product so I think it would be a good project from them to take up.

Holy crap, a 70% spike is huge. But the numbers are still in the 5 digit range, so it won't have a "HUGE" impact on overall sales; although one MORE sale is always important. What I'd like to see is a 70% jump for GM in America or China. Hahahaha. =] Well actually not really, I couldn't imagine that many cars on the road polluting our country and our planet.
