BEIJING: GM To Boost Sales By 500,000 In Next 3 Yrs/ Hybrid LaCrosse Before Olympics

BEIJING (Dow Jones)--General Motors Corp. (GM) will begin selling the hybrid LaCrosse in China before the Olympics, said Maryann Combs, president of GM's Pan-Asia Technical Center.

Production of the hybrid sedan will begin in China in late June and will go on sale in July, said Robert Socia, executive vice president of Shanghai General Motors.

Combs and Socia were speaking at a press conference before the 2008 auto show in Beijing.

BEIJING -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Corp. (GM) aims to increase sales by half a million units in the next three years in China, said Kevin Wale, president of GM in China.

GM sold over 1 million units in China in 2007.


"We aim to grow in line with the market," Wale said.
GM will continue to invest $1 billion a year in China in expanding operations, including in capacity expansion, distribution network and technology.

The U.S. automaker does not expect any major impact from the Chinese government's tightening monetary policy, Wale said.

China will be the world's largest auto market before 2020, Wale said.
Wale was speaking at a press conference before the 2008 auto show in Beijing.

It could be the 2-mode system. It makes its debut on FWD vehicles later this year on the Saturn Vue. It's an expensive system, but profit margins in China are bigger so they might be able to use it rather than the BAS. Just a guess.

What's this BS dorky vw commercial claiming that they are #1 in china? They must be talking about an individual brand because they only sold 900k last year.

GM sold 1 million or so Buicks last year, beating the record for the most sold brand.

I believe GM sold only 440K Buicks, the rest were Chevrolets, Wulings, Sabres etc.

VW is larger in China than GM. GM uses a clever PR trick - by production/sales volume, SAIC-GM is indeed number one in China (OK, was until lat year), but VW has TWO JVs, SAIC-VW and FAW-VW, which are both comparable in size to SAIC-GM and thus combined VW production/sales in China is higher.

VW sold a total of 910,000 in China in 2007 (all ventures), GM a total of 1.03 million. But the big story is Toyota up 62% to 500,000.

I think the confusion around GM is that half of their sales are Wulings - tiny vans made my a company that until recently GM only had a minority shareholding in. So Toyota and VW are both outselling GM in terms of "real" cars.
