US safety regulators probe Scion moonroof failures
Tuesday, Jul 11, 2006

DETROIT, July 11 (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety regulators said on Tuesday they had begun an investigation of whether the glass moonroof in the Scion tC is prone to shatter, risking passenger injury in the sport coupe made by Toyota Motor Corp.
.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)said it had received nine reports from consumers, who said the glass in the moonroof had shattered, raining fragments down on the passenger seating area in some cases.
In one case, a person reported being cut by the falling glass, NHTSA said.

Re: US safety regulators probe Scion moonroof failures

If this is a recall or whatever, how on earth would they correct it?? A lot of the roof is glass...they can't easily replace it with a painted panel or a Lexan sunroof. Hmmm...

they should be able to replace it with the same type setup as in the windshield (with the clear film in it).

This is not old news because now there is a probe being led by U.S. safety regulators and not Toyota engineers.

The previous recall on the tC was for a wind deflector that is glass, this report is for the entire sunroof.

I hope the Truth About Cars makes mention of it. They held up the Corvette's glass roof problem as an example of sub-par GM quality. Now they should mention the Scion roof as well as all of the other Toyota recalls to be truly "candid" and "unbiased" as their website so proudly proclaims.

On the other hand, don't be on it.

So true, the Corvette story was everywhere. Toyota certainly has had bad news lately. They aren't invincible, and they're bound to trip up. (Which it looks like they're doing)

I hope TC owners are ok as I hope Toyota is able to rectify the problem. I encourage GM to do better, not the competition to "let up" if you get what I'm saying. Thats unfortunate, but hey, lets see how "biased" or not the media is in their coverage of these events relative to GM/Ford's missteps and if the NYT has any additional comment they'd like to pronounce to the world.

Re: When it Rains, it Pours: US safety regulators probe SCION Failures

I am sick and tired of the media not relaying this information like they do with GM recalls and problems. Toyota IS the problem. They should be writing articles how they cause job losses and economic strife. How they lie and cheat their way into American wallets. Their management is full of scandal. They have high recalls. They copy designs and infringe on patents. I could go on and on, trust me.

wow that is huge. If the investigation reveals that it is not safe, then that will cost a lot for Toyota to fix. Wow
