VW recalls 362,000 cars, GM recalls some Corvettes

http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/060526/autos_recall.html?.v=4

DETROIT (Reuters) - Volkswagen AG (XETRA:VOWG.DE - News) is recalling 362,000 cars in the United States because a brake light switch may malfunction, according to U.S. safety regulators.

The models involved include the Jetta sedan from 1999-2002 model years, Jetta III from 1999-2000 model years and the New Beetle from 1998-2002 model years, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site on Friday.

NHTSA said the brake lights could become inoperative, or remain on if installed incorrectly during a previous recall.

Separately, NHTSA said General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - News) is recalling 30,793 Chevrolet Corvette cars from the 2005-2006 model years as the adhesive between the roof panel and the frame may separate and the roofs could fly off

"If there is a complete separation, the roof panel may detach from the vehicle and it could strike another vehicle and cause injury and property damage," NHTSA said.

Fat chance my friend.

My new thread would have started with the following headline:

CBS NEWS LEADS 5:00 BROADCAST WITH CORVETTE RECALL STORY

The news media is ALL OVER this one.

And we were doing so well in the media this week...

GM Recalls 34,000 Corvettes To Fix Removable-Hardtop Flaw

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES - May 26, 2006 5:56 p.m.

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. said Friday it is voluntarily recalling 34,000 Chevrolet Corvettes from the 2005 and 2006 model years to fix a problem with a removable hardtop.

In some cases, a significant composite-plastic piece on the top can peal off and separate from the top's magnesium frame, GM spokesman Alan Adler said. The company sells a variety of versions of the Corvette, including a coupe with a permanent top and a soft-top convertible. The recall only affects vehicles with a painted removable hard top, which represent a sizeable portion of total Corvette sales.

Mr. Adler said the company knows of 21 cases where the plastic piece separated from the frame. He said there have been no injuries or crashes related to the problem.

GM sold 32,489 Corvettes in 2005 and it is considered the "halo" product in the auto maker's high-volume Chevrolet brand, according to automotive trade publication Ward's Automotive Reports. The company recently redesigned the Corvette, marking the sixth time in the vehicle's storied history that it has been redone by the auto maker.

Yeah, I read about this one quite awhile ago--see for yourself:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1369957

I definitely think some people are getting a little too excited over this (it is just a superficial, look-pretty panel), even though it still should never happen. "Z06 blows its top" is not exactly a good headline.

Anyone have any idea how much these Z06 roof panels weigh? Just curious as to how light they are.

Re: VW recalls 362,000 cars, GM recalls some Corvettes

There is no excuse for the poor quality and potential problem with the outer roof panel seperating on the 2005 - 2006 Corvettes.

This is a serious, safety problem and it is not the result of "new technology". GM has been manufacturing Corvettes with removeable roof panels since the 1968 model year.

Please, don't anyone post a topic about how GM's quality is improving so much. This will be the third safety recall for some of the 2005 Corvettes.......

it shouldnt happen but its still no big deal. There are a lot of morons around here, and the rest of the Inet. making way to big a deal.

they havent been making removable hardtops every year since 68, they dont even have the same material.

Its called a precaution. This has only happend to 21 vettes. the 1 being the car the completely lost it ( posted all over the internet). FYI theyve only had 2 recalls or 05 not the roofs, and this for 06. the rest of them have been TSB

why do you even own a vette or have your name as one?

I own a 1999 C5 - ordered and purchased new. It is my third Corvette (33 years of Corvette ownership - I keep them and drive them.....). It has been the subject of two safety recalls - seatbelt and the steering column lock system.

It may not be a big deal to you - but to a C6 owner, it would be a big deal. I still believe there is no excuse for this type of poor quality. No flames or ill will intended.

Especially when it's a brand new Z06 like the one that was posted all over the internet.

Tough times are ahead. A brand new car is not in the cards. My new (to me) 16 year old Accord serves the purpose extremely well. And it's paid off!
