Toyota "warranty enhances" 600,000 Siennas

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=678203
w/e it is a recall and a HUGE one ... I wish Toyota would finally stop getting a free pass - this should be named what it is: RECALL.

Toyota is really having problems with the simple things, tailgate welds, door panel welds, whats next? engine failures?

And yes - this is a recall. These are the instances that show a media bias. You won't find this on the major news networks, even though its a huge recall.

Looks like they may be a leader in recalls this year. Anyone have numbers?

I hate that people yell 'bias' all the time... but there sure is something off about the title of the article:

Toyota to cover defect- In mass mailing going out soon, company offers to pay for minivan doors with bad welds
This sounds like they're doing this out of the goodness of their hearts. They built a faulty product... it should be fixed. Pretty simple. A recall by any other name...

Yes, the stats are easy to find. They are maybe 5th in the NHTSA stats, far behind Ford and Chrysler and VW and I believe Nissan. This particular case won't get reported in any stats anywhere because they stepped up before the NHTSA acted based on any safety concerns. That is good PR at work.

The difference is of course that in a 'safety recall' they must do the work on every vehicle involved. In this issue they only will do the work if an owner asks to have it done. If half the owners don't ask to have the work done or are over 100,000 miles then nothing has to be done. It's a good way to diffuse a problem.

It seems to be a more common procedure ( see the thread #8 in the RECALLS forum )

So, by not making it a mandatory repair, and by not issuing a formal recall, they are leaving themselves open to the class action lawsuit when people are injured by their faulty product; which according to them isn't a safety concern.

Yea, that's GREAT PR at work.

Can anyone belive that there is a siennaclub.org? Is that sad or what? What do they talk about outside of saying that thier cars used to be so well built? Cup holders?

I can only imagine the action packed threads on that board. A message board dedicated to a minivan. Wow.

Re: Toyota "warranty enhances" 600,000 Siennas

I feel sorry for these people, but I feel that things could be slowly turning against Toyota. These aren't isolated incidents and word of mouth does spread quickly, even if the news doesn't report it. A guy tries to buy a kid friendly vehicle and it ends up crushing one of his little one's hands would be a story that someone wouldn't blow off.

Re: Toyota "warranty enhances" 600,000 Siennas

I only found two hits in a Google News search for sienna door weld. That is interesting how it's not being picked up.

I agree with others here, this is more than just a "warranty enhancement." That politically correct term makes me want to hurl.

Re: Toyota "warranty enhances" 600,000 Siennas

I'm surprised no one commented on the fact Toyota is only paying 75% of the costs, which means it is NOT a recall as that would require Toyota to foot the full 100% of the cost.

That means, if the NHTSA decides to make it a recall -- which they can at any time -- Toyota will have to reimburse all the customers.

This is BAD PR. They should just do a recall. But it appears Toyota's hubris doesn't permit itself to admit its created a slew of faulty products of late. Remember, they didn't recall the sludged engines, either. This is the type of attitude GM got called out on the mat for in the late 60s and early 70s. Toyota is truly following GM's old playbook, and that's a very bad idea.
