Toyota recalls record 1.27M cars

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.T), Japan's biggest auto maker, said on Tuesday it would recall about 1.27 million cars in Japan -- its biggest ever -- including its Corolla and 15 other models due to troubles with their headlight switching systems.

Toyota declined to comment on the cost of the recall.

Another fiasco after Prius? Quantity and sales record=Quality down the toilet?

drip.........drip..........drip.........drip - Wow, and I thought that Toyota was immune to making products that had defects serious enough to consider being recalled. The only thing is my whole perception of Toyta is now shot, you see, I have always believed that Toyota was perfect because they are Japanese.

Most people think the same, and I think us American need to get with the program.

WOW! I think TOYOTA will win the most coveted award for 2005. TOYOTA THE 2005 "KING OF RECALLS." But wait, this announcement is just for JAPAN only. So we'll expect that the U.S. fans will also receive theirs.

Kool_zx3, IF THAT'S THE CASE, WE'LL JUST CHANGE THE TITLE INTO "TOYOTA" THE 2005 FOREIGN CARMAKER KING OF RECALLS.

Why don't recalls appear on the News Ticker?

Here is the update:

TOKYO (AFX) - Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor said today it is recalling 1.27 mln cars to repair defective headlight switches.

The recall by the world's number two carmaker covers 16 different models including the Corolla, Platz, Vitz, Funcargo, bB and ist.

Toyota will also repair similar defects in some 140,000 of the same models in Australia, Thailand and Singapore, a company spokesman said. He added that the problem has occurred in cars with right-hand steering wheels only.

The transport ministry said there had been 230 complaints about the defective headlight switches.

'The main reason for the massive recall is that there is a growing tendency to use the same parts in different mass-selling models,' a ministry official said.

Toyota refused to make public the costs related to the recall but the mass-circulation daily Yomiuri Shimbun estimated it at more than 88 mln usd.

Yup.

Also keep in mind this recall is spread across *16* models, not one or two models.
