Sure is , as usual in more ways than one . First , the press in their typical uneducated fashion rounds the number down to 250,000 or "around" 250,000 worldwide rather than a more accurate 264,000 or 265,000 .
Autoblog of course gets it completely wrong at 215,000 worldwide .

Pipe fault prompts Toyota recall

Toyota is recalling 264,000 cars to repair faulty fuel pipes - its second product call-back in just over a month.
The Japanese car giant said the latest recall concerned Crown, Mark X and Lexus models made over the two years until December 2005.
While most of the recalled vehicles are in Japan, some 49,000 affected Lexus GS and IS models were sold abroad, mainly in the US, UK and Canada.

(Of course , lets not forget 17OCT07's announcements in this defect area .....)

Second , the same press evidently lacking any discernable critical thinking skills and or memory ( in all fairness only in regards to Toyota screw ups ) forgets to add the earlier recall numbers concerning exactly the same issue and other very similiar fuel line/hose problems/failures that also have resulted in recall actions.

Toyota Recalls 472k Domestic Models for Fuel Line Defect

By Samir Syed
October 17, 2007 - 1,047 Views

Agencie France-Presse (AFP) reports that Toyota is recalling 472k Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) vehicles for a faulty fuel systems. Although no related accidents or incidents have been reported to date, the defect could cause gas line leakages. All told, the company's recalling eight different JDM models, including the flagship Toyota Crown, which occupies the same slot in Toyota's JDM line-up as the Camry occupies in the good ol' USA. Arriving hot on the heels of Toyota's decline in Consumer Reports' reliability ratings, the news is sure to arm the pro-domestic crowd with more ammunition against the automotive world's new king of the hill. Interestingly, the recall includes models manufactured from 1999 - 2004, when Toyota was thought to be the far-and-away leader in reliability and initial quality.

Here is a bit of the source article from above ie the link within .

http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5...d_Wo3hUo1P_0Iw

Toyota to recall 470,000 cars due to defective parts

Oct 17, 2007
TOKYO (AFP) — Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday it was recalling more than 470,000 cars in Japan due to problems with the fuel <396,000> and steering systems <74,000> in the latest dent to the automaker's reputation for quality.
The Japanese auto giant will recall 277,074 passenger cars of eight models, including the Crown luxury sedan, produced in Japan between September 1999 and October 2004, the automaker said.
Toyota said the recall was aimed at exchanging parts used in the fuel control system and pipes, which may cause fuel leaks.
The company will also recall 120,406 cars of various models due to malfunction of fuel pumps, and 74,347 cars to change defective parts in the steering system.

So a non hogwash article or one about GM would at the very least add 265,000 and 277,000 TOGETHER and include something like this ;

....this brings Toyota's recall count in the last six weeks to 542,000 vehicles worldwide for fuel line defects alone ..........

Now go back farther (MYR1988/CYR1996) and 'it' (# of these specific fuel line defects) just keeps getting bigger and bigger ............and then add in all the other recalls ........

Moving forward...on yet another recall!

Hopefully people will start to realize that Toyota is not infallible.

Wonder what the reaction is over at ToyotaNation??

This is bad for Toyota, except for being known for reliability what else are they known for? If they screw up reliability they will dig their own grave. The timing is perfect, GM is improving its vehicles and Toyota's vehicles are going down the crapper.

I nearly lost a friend tonight @ dinner when I asked if his Lexus was being recalled for a fuel leak...I thought he was gonna hot me by the way he got so virulent about how TMS & Lexus STILL make a high quality product, better than anyone else-worldwide...

I looked @ him & told him..."oh OK..well good luck"...and the conversation turned...thankfully.

When i moved to the USA in the late 90s, other than the Corvette, there was nothing on the market that would make me want to walk into a Chevy dealership.
But what they see is each new vehicle from GM being so much better, with style inside and out. With Toyota, it's just boring. They've always been boring, but reliable. Now some of my buddies are questioning the reliability part and if they can't have that they see no point in even looking at a Toyota.

Deep down I still believe a lot of North Americans want GM to succeed with their new vehicles. But they weren't going to go visit a dealership to buy a yawnmobile. It has to stand out. Lutz knows that it's all about product, so do most car buyers.

In the end Toyota appeals to those who want an appliance. But, if it's not reliable they'll lose those customers as there's nothing left to hold them. Thus Toyota must be panicked over all the recalls.

Yeah , and I wonder what they think of this as well .You keep stacking defect on top of defect and eventually bad things start to happen .

Toyota faces 2 lawsuits for safety defects

Toyota customers, whistleblower take carmaker to court alleging serious safety problems.

STOCKTON, California (AP) -- Gurinder Singh's lawyers say he would still have a father if a faulty seatbelt in the family car had unlatched instead of pinning his dad inside the flaming Toyota Corolla where he lost his life.
A civil trial on their claim that Toyota Motor Corp., the world's No. 2 automaker, made thousands of Corollas equipped with unsafe seatbelts opened Tuesday in California.
A second lawsuit against the carmaker, filed in nearby Alameda County Superior Court, also threatened to undermine Toyota's squeaky-clean image.

Japan's Toyota to recall 264,000 cars to repair fuel pipes
Singh, 19, and his father, Raminder Singh, 60, were driving when their 2002 Toyota Corolla was struck by another vehicle and veered off the road and smashed into a tree, Singh family lawyer Louis Franecke told jurors in his opening statement Tuesday.
The younger Singh said he quickly released his seatbelt buckle but could not free his father from the jammed belt.
By the time the son crawled out of the car to seek help, the car's engine had caught fire, and he could do nothing but watch as his father burned to death, the teen said in an interview before a judge imposed a gag order in the case.

I think most people that buy Toyota's are in denial about the so called Toyota quality. I think its because there is a sort of cockiness of I researched this purchase and I know that it is superior, and anything else hurts their pride. The car could blow up and they would still defend it. Ofcourse this is true of most people who buy a new car, but it seems to be particularily prevalant with Toyota buyers. Before anyone jumps on this comment, yes there are exceptions, but they are exceptions in my experience.
As far as your friend, he doesn't sound like he was being much of a friend to you, considering that you work for GM and he was talking about how much better Lexus is. Sounds kinda rude, but I guess he was upset about his recall.

The more I think about it the more nervous it makes me to drive the car. When it's light out tomorrow I'm gonna look around as best I can to see if there's any leaks I can see, assuming I can see anything at all with all the plastic covers under the hood. I don't like the idea of fuel potentially leaking under the hood of the car.
