Toyota recalls 210,000 Land Cruiser SUVs worldwide for axle problem

Toyota recalls 210,000 Prado SUVs worldwide for axle problem
TOKYO -- Toyota Motor Corp. will recall about 210,000 Land Cruiser Prados worldwide due to an axle problem, Japan's largest automaker said Tuesday.

About 100,000 vehicles will be recalled in Japan in addition to about 110,000 others, mainly in Australia, Europe and China, according to company spokesman Paul Nolasco.

The Prado is not sold in North America, nor are any Land Cruisers based on the Prado model, he said.

The vehicles were produced between April 1996 and January 1999, the company said in a statement.

The company said that a crack may occur in the Prado's rear axle shaft if it is repeatedly driven on winding roads in the mountains at a high speed, it said, warning that a wheel may come off in the worst case.

Anyone know if this suspension/axle/underbody structure is used on the new FJ Cruiser, 4 Runner, or Lexus GX470???

The 1996-1999 Prado in question looks like this:

I think it's based on the last generaton 4Runner... so it shouldn't affect the FJ, the GX470, and the current 4Runner.

Can't wait to get the paper tomorrow morning and not read a single word of this anywhere...

I should call my newspaper company and innocently ask why this wasn't there.

I had one of those assigned to me when I was stationed in Uzbekistan (in 2002) while I was in the Army. The passenger side rear wheel just fell off one day while I was making a low speed turn. That vehicle was such a piece of crap. When I called in the contracted maintenance company for repairs, they told me it was a fairly common occurence with those vehicles. No wonder the Army contracted for them... they were certainly from the lowest bidder.

I wonder why it took them so long to figure out that there is a problem with these.

Maybe it's because it took a long time to occur? Manufacturers don't hide these for years and randomly recall them when they feel like it.
