Re: Toyota recalls 206,388 Corolla Versos in Europe, elsewhere

I just hope GM can last through the end of the year without any major recalls - especially on their launch vehicles. Toyota recalls mean nothing if we have them as well. It would be great to have a year where Toyota recalled more vehicles in more total recalls than GM. GM has to focus on quality and keep the path they are on.

Too early to get excited.

I said it before and will say it aga in - I am more comfortable buying a new release from GM or Ford than Toyota or Honda and defiintely more than Nissan or Mitsubishi ....

And if we report on recalls affecting vehicles in North America, what do we find? The honest stats reported by tgferg67 in another thread, give a much more accurate picture regarding recent recalls:

WOW that would mean GM's quality is just as good as Toyotas, or Toyotas quality is just as bad as GM's. Which ever way you look at it, people still believe Toyota is superior.

Or maybe people just like to drive an import and and bash anything domestic.

Re: Toyota recalls 206,388 Corolla Versos in Europe, elsewhere

I drove one of these a few weeks ago, and while it's nothing extrordinary it's actually a nice looking little car. I like it better than the US Matrix. Seems to be a fairly popular car... I see a far number of them, in an area where the bulk of the cars are domestic nameplates.

EDIT: I made a mistake. I looked at pics, and I don't like the Verso. It's the regular Corolla that I drove, see lots of, and think looks good. The Verso is too tall and has a goofy profile, especially along the beltline.

No, you shouldn't be scared. The problem is that GM and Toyota are about even with quality but Toyota tends to get a free pass or has the perception of better quality.

It may have been true in the past but it is certainly not true now.

The Toyota and the GM are about even when it comes to quality. That said, GM is on an upward curve while Toyota has been sinking a bit more as of late.

This ultimately means that design plays an ever more important factor. If the Toyota and the GM are about equal in quality but the GM is cheaper to fix as needed, a bit cheaper to buy, and more appealing on the inside and out then the GM has a lot of positives on its sides. As the perception of GM changes and as they cut down fleet sales, the resale of GMs should go up as well.

So if GM can blow Toyota out of the water on styling and on catering to market segments (and GM is the only company that can effectively hit all segments because of Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Saab, Saturn, and Hummer - lots of variety there) then GM can begin to grow in the consumer end again. It's not a short road to success and it requires making sure the designs don't lag to long or the technology doesn't take too long to implement. Right now GM is recovering from years of neglect for these things. I believe they have finally figured it out. If they stick with it then they could really make some noise.

There's no need to feel unsafe in a Toyota, but I think we do see that Toyota's quality reputation is being severely tarnished. If the public perception changes then it can work in GM's favor.

It's only a matter of time when people realize that they should have stuck with GM, especially when GM stuck by it's customer's in time of need like the twin towers falling, WWI, WWII, and so forth. Take care of our own and when we are all set then we can help others. I am glad that Toyota is mortal after all.

Yeah you are totally right man. All of these (mostly) voluntary recalls are totally hurting Toyota in North America. Toyotas are breaking down left and right. It's all over the news, haven't you been watching?

I can't find it, but where are those figure showing "recall rates" for the year this year or last?), where Toyota was by far the worst and Ford was second worst? I thought that just came out in the past 3 months or so, but I can't find it and am trying to recall what the figures were. Anyone?

This is an important turning point. Once the Toyo-heads were content to bash GM over quality issues - "those crappy Domestics". Now they are content to say "we have an equal number of recalls, percentage-wise, as you do". Seems like their standard for quality is either slipping, or they're admitting they aren't as rock solid perfect as they used to brag.

Its important because many people for years have bought Toyotas because of the big difference in quality between Toyota and Domestics (or 2nd tier Japanese like Suzuki and Mitsubishi).

Toyota's recalls become a weekly event! It's not funny any more it's hillarious!

And some people say there's no God!
