Recall# 07340-2008 STS/STS-V Tire Pressure Indicator-4586 vehicles involved

Date: March 5, 2008

Subject: Upcoming Noncompliance Recall 07340

Tire Pressure Monitor Indicator

Models: 2008 Model Year Cadillac STS and STS-V

To: AllCadillac Dealers

Attention: Dealer Operator, General Manager, Sales Manager,
Service Manager, Used Car Manager, Parts Manager
and Warranty Administrator

Based on information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, the media may report that General Motors will be announcing a noncompliance recall involving certain 2008 model year Cadillac STS and STS-V vehicles.

These vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 138, Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS). The standard requires an indication to the driver for certain TPMS malfunctions. When the system detects a malfunction, the low tire warning light should flash for about one minute and then stay on for the remainder of the ignition cycle. A Driver Information Center message will also be displayed on the instrument panel. On these vehicles, these indications of a system malfunction do not work.

To correct this condition, dealers are to reprogram the remote control door lock receiver module.

A total number of 4,586 vehicles are involved. GM anticipates releasing the dealer bulletin on March 11, 2008 and mailing customer notification letters on March 18, 2008.

GM Vehicle Inquiry System (GMVIS) information for this recall will not be available until the recall bulletin is released to dealers.

Its interesting how they piggy back systems in a vehicle to save weight and costs.

Yes, it does. Might be worth it if they worked, but I've never seen a system that sensed anything less than 10 psi, which any moron could see by looking at the tire anyway. They arent accurate enough to be useful, and a a PITA to deal with when changing tires.

Speaking for the consumer - I like the feature. It was available (standard) on my 1999 Corvette and it was also standard on my 2008 Impala - both display the actual tire pressure. My 2004 Grand Prix has a system that does not display the actual pressure, but warns when a tire is over/under pressure.

I like to be able to check the actual tire pressure while I am driving - especially on a long trip. Yes, I take an air pressure gauge and check my tires, but I like the feature.

Why don't you like the feature? Don't you like fixing them? One problem I have already seen is the multiple types that GM has / or had. They can be very confusing to the consumer.

If the direct display type was available on the 1999 Corvette (10 years ago in 1998), why didn't GM install this system on all cars?

I dont know about the rest, but if you've ever worked on a car with one of these systems you'd know that it is not a fun job. At least on the one I've seen.

OnStar could be so useful for these types of recalls!

Will this type of information, recalls, show up on the monthly email report from OnStar and the car?

You still never stated exactly what is so hard to fix on the systems. I'm just curious what is hard about it.

I hate them because I mount a lot of tires. The more low profile the tires are, the easier it is to snag the fragile sensor. I broke one a few years ago when they were relatively new. Don't know if they've come down in price, but that sucker was expensive back then!

I've never really had this problem with a GM, but every time we rent a customer a Nissan product the damn Tire Pressure light is on. I can't tell you the number of times I've said "yea, it does that when it gets cold out, you can ignore it. You know New England!!".

These things are useless and add unnecessary costs to cars. If they were accurate they'd be great, and if they were cheap to replace (which they're not), i'd be all for them, but as it is, i dislike them.

Your 100% right. I think it's really rediculous when you live in NC and have the same problem!!

Who knows, but if it is simply a reprogram of a computer, OnStar should be able to handle system upgrades like this. It would also be a great incentive to keep OnStar subscriptions!

What if you don't keep your Onstar subscription? All 2008 and newer cars have to have this system. If it was part of Onstar and you quit, you would lose the system.

Not actually all that hard to replace, but they are very easy to damage and they are pricey little buggers.
