PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL #06230/ B crossovers & U vans

GM PARTS BULLETINS & INFORMATION - TO BUICK, CHEVROLET AND PONTIAC DEALERS
Subject:Bulletin GMP07-211 - 06230 Fuel Tank Housing Fracture - Replace Fuel Tank; Models: 2002-2004 Buick Rendezvous, 2001-2004 Chevrolet Venture (Regular Wheelbase), and 2001-2004 Pontiac Aztek, Montana (Regular Wheelbase)Message #:VSU20071635
PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL #06230
DATED: NOVEMBER 27, 2007

DESCRIPTION:

Note: Due to part availability, this recall is being administered in two phases. The first phase will consist of Chevrolet Venture and Pontiac Montana (U-Van) vehicles. The second phase will be Buick Rendezvous and Pontiac Aztek (B-Van) vehicles. All involved vehicles will be loaded into GMVIS at the time of the first phase.

CONDITION

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2002-2004 Buick Rendezvous; 2001-2004 Chevrolet Venture (regular wheelbase), and Pontiac Aztek and Montana (regular wheelbase) vehicles. Variations in the manufacturing process or exposure to high temperatures may lead to a fracture of the fuel tank inlet check valve (ICV) on some of these vehicles. A fracture may allow fuel vapors to pass through and allow droplets of fuel to accumulate on the side of the fuel tank. If this condition occurred and a sufficient amount of fuel leaked out, and if an ignition source was present, a vehicle fire could occur.

CORRECTION
    • Dealers are to replace the fuel tank.
    • Refer to Product Safety Recall Bulletin #06230 for the service procedure and other detailed information.

    EFFECTIVE DATE:
    • U-Van Owner mailing is scheduled to begin December 4, 2007.
    • B-Van Owner mailing is scheduled to begin December 13, 2007.

    GENERAL INFORMATION:

    PARTS INFORMATION

Parts required to complete this recall are to be obtained from General Motors Service and Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.

Wouldn't this also apply to Oldsmobile Silhouettevans 01-03?

No, as I think they were all LWB from 2001...

Sorry to say this but I have no clue what "LWB" means. All I know is that my mom bought a 2003 silhouette (though it's now sold) so they were made through at least 03 maybe 04.

Re: PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL #06230/ B crossovers & U vans

LWB = long wheelbase, or extended length....the recall is for SWB or short wheelbase vans...or regular length...

One thing, this goes for all recalls & TSB's....if they were going to include other vehicles, such as a Silhouette...they would state so in the recall or TSB listing...

Can GM recall these minivans and refuse to give them back? Just keep them off the roads and out of the minds of potential buyers.

That's funny. What would you give them in return?

No. Unless GM wishes to buy it from you (if you purchased it), or buy out your remaining lease contract, and even then, it's your choice. But why would GM wish to waste that much money over a minor chance of a very minor fuel leak, which they can fix pretty cheaply? All they lack is enough parts on hand to fix all of them immediately.

And if there were any danger, GM could still "recommend" that owners not drive them, or bring them in to be inspected or given a temporary fix until parts do arrive. Since they are willing to delay half the recall suggests to me that GM doesn't see any real danger.

GM wouldn't normally take a vehicle back because of a recall, if they would, it would be in the recall bulletin and on the letters sent out, and that is extremely rare. There are only two recalls that I know of where that was done.

Re: PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL #06230/ B crossovers & U vans

I have an '02 Montana that I'm being told is not the "regular" wheelbase; however, I have had a crack form around the bottom of the check valve including nearly 270° of the perimeter of the union.

After filling up or when parked overnight with a nearly full tank (maybe 3/4+), I would leave a 2' stain of wet pavement in the morning. My driveway is angled away from the house, forcing the fuel towards the rear of the tank and likely making the situation worse.

It has been registered in AZ since ~2003.

NOT having the sense to check for recall information FIRST, I attempted repair with the intent to bond it into place. I removed the remaining portion of the valve that was still attached, but none of my usual adhesives would work.

A local dealer is helping to determine if it applies to the LWB version. They seem to think it will.

The VIN# can determine it right away....

ANY GM dealer should be able to tell you if your vehicle falls under this recall or not...
