Nissan recalls 650,000 cars

Nissan recalls 650,000 cars

WASHINGTON -- Nissan North America Inc. is recalling more than 650,000 cars because their engines may suddenly stop running.

Affected models are 2002 and 2005-06 Altimas and Sentras with 2.5-liter engines.

The crankshaft position sensor can overheat and briefly stop sending signals. If the interruption is too brief for the engine control module to diagnose the problem, the engine stops, increasing the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

Dealers will reprogram the engine control module to correct the problem, NHTSA said. Owner notification is to begin about Dec. 1

Yikes That is A LOT of cars for a company with only 6-7% market share.

What is funny is that I have a buddy that has a 2007 G35, and his security system sometimes won't let him start the car, and they can't find what is wrong. It thinks it is being stolen so it shuts down all his systems.

I think HAL 9000 may be hiding in your buddy's car....

Is it that span of years? It's odd that it would be only 2002 and 2005-06. They had it wrong, then right for a while, then wrong again? Odd.

Do you think the same supplier is responsible for the recall for GM and Nissan?

Re: Nissan recalls 650,000 cars

I guess that's one of the drawbacks to only having two main engines in your lineup. If something is wrong with an engine component then it will affect a lot more vehicles. Can you imagine if GM only used the 3.6 and it had a common part that was bad on all of them. Ew it would be ugly.

That QR25DE engine is so problematic. Wasn't there a massive recall on the same 2.5L like 2 years ago?

I hate Nissan.
I hope every single owner will regret their decision to buy Nissan.

Having to pay dealers to fix 650k cars is not cheap, nor does it look good

Re: Nissan recalls 650,000 cars

Makes me wonder why Nissan would do this when 2000-2003 Cadillac/Oldmobile/Pontiac NorthStars and 3.5 Shortstars crank sensors do EXACTLY the same thing...

Nissan calls them back and fixes them... while GM just lets its owners of these (very nice) cars work it out with the dealers...

Who desides a recall is a recall? Do manufactures do this? or are they "forced" by the DOT/EPA/NHTSA/someone else?

I have never heard of such a thing and I monitor some big Cadillac boards. Do you have anymore information on this?

And like another poster mentioned, what is up with the date ranges for the recall? Did they have a bunch of old stock sitting around in a warehouse that they needed to use up?
