Nissan faces costly Altima, Sentra recall for Engine Fires

LOS ANGELES - Nissan North America could face a hefty price tag to remedy a recall of 96,800 2006 Nissan Altimas and Sentras, which may consume an inordinate amount of oil and cause engine fires.

In a June 16 letter from Brad Bradshaw, Nissan's incoming senior vice president for sales and marketing, the company told dealers that it would pick up vehicles from dealer inventories, transfer them to Nissan facilities for inspection, and return them after inspection and repair.

"We have not made a blanket statement that we will replace all the engines, but we are saying we will make the customer satisfied - whatever it takes," said Nissan spokesman Fred Standish in Nashville. "Fix it, repair it, replace it - whatever is necessary."

I'm actually suprised someone hasn't said something like "Kerkorian wants to have a partnership with a company that has cars that catch on fire!"

Another reason not to ally with with Nissan. So much for the VQ engine.

Re: Nissan faces costly recall

The VQ is mentioned nowhere in the article posted

It only cites the QR which has been junk and plagued with catastrophic problems since 2002.

Just what GM needs... to ally with a company with quality problems

My bad. It's still a Nissan engine. Though it would of been fun if it was the VQ

Car engines catching fire are never "fun"

Wait six months. There's more to come....Ghosn may have waited too long to play his hand with York/GM.

Nissan needs to get it's own house in order. Yes GM may have a few problems that are slowly but surely being resolved but it certainly doesn't have any cars that catch fire.

Potentially quite expensive. Nissan seens to be doing poorly, but this one seems to be the worst lately. So what else is to come with Nissan?

Engines catching on fire? No need to compund problems for GM.

I wonder what "inordinate" amount of oil means and how customers could have know about this before hand.
Ghosn still has quality problems on his hand and it's not clear if he's addressing them.

Hopefully the pending proposal will go up in flames just like the said Nissan engines. Sorry I couldn't help it.

Re: Nissan faces costly Altima, Sentra recall for Engine Fires

You guys are looking at this deal awful pessimistically! I think the best part of this is Mr Standish's last words in the article. "Fix it, replace it, whatever it takes to make customers happy." That is the key to GM's problems!!! If GM gets nothing out of the deal w/Nissan, I would hope they could learn that line!
