NHTSA to investigate GM SUV fires

Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The government is investigating reports of engine fires in General Motors' full-size sport utility vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it has received two reports of fires on 2007 model year Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs.

Re: NHTSA to investigate GM SUV fires

It doesn't look like they have any idea how the two fires started.

That sucks. I hope my Silverado isn't screwed up or something. I thought only Fords and Hondas spontaneously combusted.

I hope they figure out what went wrong and quickly.

that's weird. knock on wood, but the new tahoe has proven to be a trouble free unit for us at my dealership. rarely ever see em in for anything other than routine maintenance.

Thank you for posting this!

Not good news at all. Hope my 2007 Yukon is okay...

Quote:
The investigation, which also includes the 2007 GMC Yukon SUV, involves about 423,000 SUVs.
Of course any fire is unacceptable, but in light of the sheer number of SUVs built, I hope that the problem isn't widespread (only two vehicles have caught on fire). I also hope GM can find out what is wrong and fix it promptly!

This is what happens when you speed up development of these suv's. Of course you will get some poor quality. Why does anybody buy any vehicle in their first year. You know you are going to have some kind of problem with it. If you do not have anything to tow i do not see why would anybody buy tahoe over acadia.

My Yukon XL Denali has far more cargo room than the Acadia, especially behind the third row. It is also a great deal faster and more powerful, rides fantastic, and can tow a lot more. The ride height is higher, it looks better (subjective), and is very quiet and comfortable on the highway.

I have nothing against the Acadia, of course. The Acadia is fine for what it is. Drive what makes you happy and stop worrying about what others drive!

Oh, and I have had absolutely zero problems on our 2007 Yukon XL Denali.

Only two of 423,000 units have had this issue (of which they cannot determine the cause of yet) - let's see how this works out before crucifying the General on a program that has been incredibly successful thus far.

Re: NHTSA to investigate GM SUV fires

The fact that these both occured while the trucks were in garages when this occured may indicate some help from an external source. I think some item(s) inside the garage found themselves under the vehicle, and probably near the exhaust. The items overheated and caught fire. I know it doesn't seem likely, but given the data so far, awfully probable.

If nobody ever bought a first-year car, we'd all be driving horses still. Get a grip. 2 out of 432,000 is nothing.

Re: NHTSA to investigate GM SUV fires

considering the sheer # of GM fullsize SUVs built (nearly 450,000) 2 of them catching on fire for unexplained causes is completely irrelevant! TWO out of almost FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND!! thats not even 1%...thats like .001% of the whole fleet! gimmie a break!

I put in a call to my dad for you. He works in Powertrain, I thought he could use your expertise in helping GM figure this out.

Beside the obvious subjective things that everybody will have a difference of opinion on, the full size SUVs offer much more value and performance for their cost, especially since they're priced so close together. So, besides personal opinons on styling and comfort, why would anybody buy the Acadia over a Tahoe/Yukon? A couple of MPG?

Remember ... according to the automakers, they don't have 'fires' ... they have 'thermal events'.
