Definately a Mardi Gras moment- probably injuries with GM trucks.

I was just pointing out that it was an issue that should have, and could have been easily avoided- and much cheaper to just do it right in the first place. GM is the marketplace leader- they should know how to make simple things like tailgate straps, breaks..just like Firestone should know how to make a tire that doesn't have tread separation (and Ford should know how to keep an SUV on all fours when it has a flat).

The only time I have seen a tailgate fail on a GM truck was on my friends 2000 Silverado at a bonefine for 4th of july. It was the worst coincidence, too. A female friend of hours sat on the tailgate (next to two of her friends) and without warning, they snapped. None of those were above average in weight or size in any way. All three girls fell on the ground- the last one that sat down was totally humiliated. They were all so embarassed, especially since they spilled coke (sorry, college girls...DIET coke) all over themselves. I felt bad for them- and this was before they had the recall. My friend paid for his new cables. Only one incident, but it was a bad one.

Re: GM Recalls 900,000 pickup trucks

What was said before that companies have these recalls for stupid stuff they have made for 60 years and now have problems. These car companies keep trying and trying to get parts cheaper and cheaper and making cheaper parts. At some point in time you go too cheap and the part doesnt last. Its not gm that just does this, its every car company. How cheap can we make a part and see if it lasts. Usually it works fine but sometimes it doesnt work.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said the vehicles covered by the new recall had different materials used in the support cables and involved fewer complaints.

How stupid. How frickin slanted!

A big, bold print headline for something which is less than minor. No wonder GM has a perception problem.

Meanwhile, Pruises are still stalling in traffic...

Re: GM Recalls 900,000 pickup trucks

And I was just thinking the other day about how GM hasn't had a recall in while after that big rash of them last year. I guess I jinxed them.

No, comparatively, it wasn't.

Re: GM Recalls 900,000 pickup trucks

This sucks it's a typical minor GM recall but it's still a recall so in the end of the year the number will go up.

That's what happens when you outsource your parts. You don't have quality control on someone's mistakes

GM recalls over 900,000 pickup trucks
Cables that support the tailgate have corroded, causing 84 mostly minor injuries.
March 10, 2006: 11:31 AM EST

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - General Motors is recalling over 900,000 pickups worldwide due to instances of tailgate cables corroding and snapping, a GM spokesman said Friday

The recall hits Chevrolet's Silvarado and GMC's Sierra pickup lines. Most of those affected, 805,368, are in the U.S.

The spokesman said the galvanized steel cables were protected with a plastic coating. But water has been found to get in the coating and cause the cable to corrode and snap when the tailgate is down.

GM said there have been 84 injuries, most of them minor scrapes and bumps.

Owners will receive letters in April and the tailgate cable will be replaced with a stainless steel cable.
